Filipinos are sometimes self-deprecating-not because of lack of ability or intelligence but because we measure ourselves to culturally inappropriate standards and norms. Retired UP Psychology Professor Elizabeth P. De Castro pointed out that Filipino students took the PISA (Program for International student Assessment) test in English, a foreign language and not translated to Filipino language, while other countries, like Singapore who topped the test, students took the exams in their local or native languages. Using local languages makes a big difference in ranking test scores. We have our own language, our own culture, and our own standards. We don't have to fit ourselves into Western models or standards or any other external norms for that matter. Let's change that so we can be proud of ourselves.
