No mangroves, no seafood? It's closer to the truth than you think! 🍤🐟❌

On this International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, we are shining a light on the unsung heroes of our coastlines.

Mangroves serve as critical nurseries for roughly 75% of all tropical commercial fish and shellfish species. When we lose mangroves, we don't just lose trees, we risk our food security, our biodiversity, and our frontline defense against severe weather.

🛡️The Sustainability Measure: Just 100 meters of dense mangrove forest can reduce the destructive energy of tsunami and storm surge waves by up to 66%. Investing in mangrove conservation provides coastal protection worth billions of pesos globally while securing the livelihoods of local fishing communities (UN SDG 14: Life Below Water).

While we all love the 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆 (𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘢) for its cooling branches, did you know it’s also one of the few native trees that gives us a taste of "autumn" colors? Before shedding, its broad leaves turn brilliant shades of fiery red, orange, and yellow!

🌿𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 & 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻:
There is a beautiful cycle in the Talisay. Its almond-like seeds are a favorite snack for local wildlife, reminding us of how nature selflessly provides for others. Just as its leaves transform and fall to make room for new growth, we are reminded of the beauty of letting go and trusting in God’s perfect timing. 🦜🌊

The Talisay is a highly efficient bio-indicator and phythoremediation agent. Its roots help filter out heavy metals and urban runoff, improving local groundwater quality - directly supporting 𝗨𝗡 𝗦𝗗𝗚 𝟲 (𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 & 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻).

𝘖𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘥, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦.🧠✨

The 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘄 (𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙫𝙪𝙨 𝙥𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙨), locally known as 𝘜𝘸𝘢𝘬, is one of the most intelligent birds on our campus. Far from just a shadow in the sky, these creatures are problem-solvers, highly adaptable, and fiercely loyal to their families.

🌿 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻:
There is a beautiful mystery in their resilience. The crow reminds us not to judge things by their appearance or by old stereotypes. God created every creature with a purpose, and the Uwak teaches us the grace of resourcefulness, sharp focus, and community care.

🔭 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀:
Keep your eyes on the skies, tree lines, and open fields across the campus, particularly in 𝗠𝗥𝗥 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 in the DLSU Laguna Campus. You’ll often hear their distinct, loud call or spot them cleverly foraging in pairs or small groups.

🌱 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲's 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗽 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝘄:
As omnivorous scavengers, a small family of Uwak can help control pest populations and clear organic waste daily. Keeping our campus ecosystem balanced naturally without the need for harsh chemical controls.

𝘈 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴.. 🩹✨

The 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀 (𝙀𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙮𝙥𝙩𝙪𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙜𝙡𝙪𝙥𝙩𝙖), or 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗯𝗼𝘄 𝗘𝘂𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘆𝗽𝘁𝘂𝘀, doesn’t get its vibrant colors overnight. It is by shedding its old, weathered bark that its brilliant shades of green, blue, and maroon finally shine through.

🌿 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻:
There is a quiet wisdom in this tree. Sometimes, letting go of the old is exactly how we reveal our truest, most beautiful colors. Just as nature embraces change to renew itself, may we find the grace to shed our old layers and grow.

Find them along 𝗦𝘁. 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 at the 𝗗𝗟𝗦𝗨 𝗟𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀! They provide cooling shade for parked cars and walking Lasallians. 🚗🚶‍♂️

​𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲: One mature Bagras tree sequesters 22-25 kg of CO₂ annually.
​𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Keeping native trees in our campus actively offsets carbon emissions.

🌳🇵🇭 Happy Philippine Arbor Day!

Today, we celebrate the importance of trees and our shared responsibility to protect and restore our environment. Every tree planted is a step toward a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for generations to come.

In line with this celebration, De La Salle University proudly participated in the Arbor Day celebration organized by the Save Silang Santa Rosa River (S3R2) Foundation, Inc. last June 7 at the Tree Museum, Nuvali, Calamba City, Laguna, alongside various partner companies. This initiative reflects our shared commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability.

Let us continue to nurture nature and remember that even small actions can make a lasting impact.

🌊🐢 World Sea Turtle Day 2026 🐢🌊

Today, we highlight one of the ocean’s most remarkable creatures, the sea turtle. For over 100 million years, sea turtles have navigated our oceans, playing a vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.

However, these gentle marine animals face growing threats from plastic pollution, habitat destruction, climate change, and illegal wildlife trade. Every piece of litter removed from our beaches and every effort to protect our oceans helps ensure their survival.

Let us work together to protect our seas and safeguard the future of sea turtles for generations to come.

EXPLORING THE FOREST BEYOND THE CAMPUS 🌳🌳🌳

Today, as we celebrate the International Day of Forests, Animo Nature invites you to discover a quiet treasure just beyond the grounds of De La Salle University Laguna Campus.

Accessible from the campus is a forested area that forms part of Laguna's broader natural landscape. Beneath its canopy are winding paths, native trees, insects, birds, and other wildlife that together create a living ecosystem -- one that continues to support biodiversity right beside our learning spaces.

Over the past several months, this forest has also become a living classroom for Lasallian scientists 🕵🏼‍♀️ Six batches of BS Biology interns from De La Salle University Manila Campus have worked patiently along these trails—mapping pathways 🗺️, documenting vegetation 📝, and geotagging 🔖 nearly 2,000 trees using GIS technology. Their work is gradually building a detailed map of the forest, helping us understand the distribution of trees and providing valuable data for conservation, research, and environmental education

Every tagged tree tells a story of growth, of species diversity, and of the careful stewardship needed to protect these ecosystems.

Through Animo Nature, we hope to share more of these discoveries -- revealing the species that thrive here and celebrating the students and researchers who help us see the forest more clearly.

Because sometimes, the forests that inspire us most are the ones growing quietly right beside us 🌱
