WHAT JUST HAPPENED IN BSU-SLS

The Benguet State University Gender and Development (BSU-GAD) Office conducted the 2026 National Womenโs Month โGAD to Know Campaignโ on March 6 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the BSU Secondary Laboratory School (BSU-SLS) Covered Court, gathering SLS students to promote gender awareness, equality, and womenโs empowerment as part of the nationwide celebration of National Womenโs Month.
Dr. Divina M. Yango, Dean of the BSU College of Teacher Education (CTE), opened the program with her welcome remarks followed by a message from Dr. Jude L. Tayaben, Director of BSU-GAD.
In his message, Tayaben highlighted the historical role of women leaders, saying, โThe Babaylans were recognized as women leaders before the pre-colonial era. They showed wisdom, courage, and care for their communities, proving that leadership is not limited by gender.โ
To keep the audience energized and engaged, the BSU Rondalla, headed by their adviser Alma Vida Gallardo, performed musical selections including 'Pinoy Ako' by Orange and Lemons. Further, in between discussions, the group continued performing musical interludes that added energy to the program.
Ms. Matyline A. Camfili-Talastas, Division Head for Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) under the Institute of Social Research and Development (ISRD), creatively introduced the keynote speaker, Atty. Cheryl L. Daytec-Yaรฑgot, by incorporating chant and song lines into her introduction.
In her talk on Women and the Law in the Philippines, Atty. Daytec-Yaรฑgot emphasized that violence against women often stems from โwrong beliefs, unequal power, and unfair practices,โ noting that these issues should be addressed starting within the family.
She also discussed womenโs legal rights and the importance of empowerment, reminding students that โA womanโs body is not property; she controls her body, and saying โnoโ is a complete sentence,โ highlighting that respect, autonomy, and gender equality are essential in building a safe and inclusive society.
Throughout her talk, Atty. Cheryl L. Daytec-Yaรฑgot creatively incorporated poetryโincluding her own compositions and lines from other worksโto further explain her points and emphasize the message of womenโs empowerment and gender equality.
Her speech was followed with an open forum where students actively engaged with the speaker, asking questions and reflecting on the lessons shared during the campaign.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Brenda Langaoen, Chair of the BSU-SLS, who expressed gratitude to everyone who participated, especially the keynote speaker, Atty. Cheryl L. Daytec-Yaรฑgot, and the BSU GAD Gender and Development Office and staff for organizing the meaningful activity.
