𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 | For many graduating students, the final stretch of college life is marked by thesis defenses, final requirements, and preparations for commencement exercises. But in Visayas State University, another meaningful milestone signals that a student is nearing the finish line — planting a tree. 🌱

Recently, graduating students from the Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM) participated in a tree-planting activity as part of the long-standing Viscan tradition that requires every graduating student to plant a tree before graduation. More than just a university requirement, the activity symbolizes growth, responsibility, and giving back to the environment that has become part of every Viscan’s journey.

In VSU, defending a thesis may be one of the greatest academic challenges, but planting a tree is one of the clearest signs that graduation is finally within reach. It is both a celebration of achievement and a commitment to sustainability — 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

In a university where thousands are expected to graduate each year, this simple tradition holds the power to grow forests for future generations. It serves as a reminder that education is not only about earning a diploma, but also about nurturing a future beyond oneself.

𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 | The students of 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 are bringing classroom concepts to life through an experiential learning activity at the FME Trade Fair, currently held at VSU Ecopark.

As part of their hands-on learning experience, students are now operating their own food cart businesses, allowing them to apply the principles of quality service, entrepreneurship, and guest satisfaction in a real-world setting. This activity highlights the belief that to truly understand how quality service is delivered, students must experience it themselves—not only as learners, but also as service providers and entrepreneurs.

Among the featured student-run food carts are 𝗞𝗮𝗸𝗮𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗻, a business specializing in drinks made from tablea or cacao, and 𝗕𝗶𝘀𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮, a food cart offering their own take on the well-loved Ilocos Empanada. Through these ventures, students are challenged to develop not only their products, but also their skills in customer service, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and service recovery.

𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆. By managing actual operations and engaging with real guests, they gain meaningful insights into the value of service excellence, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

This experiential learning exercise is guided by Daniel Sumabat, whose commitment to practical and industry-relevant education continues to create opportunities for students to learn beyond the classroom.

Through activities like this, students are reminded that quality service is best understood when it is practiced with purpose, passion, and professionalism.
