But in Visayas State University, another meaningful milestone signals that a student is nearing the finish line โ planting a tree. ๐ฑ
Recently, graduating students from the Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM) participated in a tree-planting activity as part of the long-standing Viscan tradition that requires every graduating student to plant a tree before graduation. More than just a university requirement, the activity symbolizes growth, responsibility, and giving back to the environment that has become part of every Viscanโs journey.
In VSU, defending a thesis may be one of the greatest academic challenges, but planting a tree is one of the clearest signs that graduation is finally within reach. As part of their hands-on learning experience, students are now operating their own food cart businesses, allowing them to apply the principles of quality service, entrepreneurship, and guest satisfaction in a real-world setting. This activity highlights the belief that to truly understand how quality service is delivered, students must experience it themselvesโnot only as learners, but also as service providers and entrepreneurs.
Among the featured student-run food carts are ๐๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฎ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ป, a business specializing in drinks made from tablea or cacao, and ๐๐ถ๐๐ธ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฎ, a food cart offering their own take on the well-loved Ilocos Empanada. Through these ventures, students are challenged to develop not only their products, but also their skills in customer service, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and service recovery.
