Sabihin mo sa friends mo “Libre ko na, bili tayo ulit!”

𝐁𝐀𝐓𝐎 𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇, 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 — In an astonishing display of competitive eating, food enthusiast Linda Walker consumed a total of 719 onigiri during a special promotional challenge hosted by the student-run enterprise Onigiri Me Tangere, drawing crowds of students, teachers, and curious onlookers.

The event, staged as part of a marketing push to boost awareness for the Filipino-flavored rice ball brand, quickly turned into a spectacle as Walker steadily worked through trays of assorted onigiri variants—from adobo and sisig fillings to innovative fusion flavors inspired by local cuisine. What began as a friendly challenge soon escalated into a marathon eating feat that lasted several hours.

According to organizers, the challenge was designed to highlight the product’s bite-sized convenience and wide flavor selection. “We wanted something memorable that would showcase our brand identity—fun, bold, and uniquely Filipino,” said one of the student entrepreneurs managing the stall. “We didn’t expect it to become this big.”

Witnesses described the atmosphere as festive, with classmates cheering and documenting the attempt on social media. By the time Walker reached the 500 mark, the crowd had swelled, turning the small school-based food booth into an impromptu event space. Applause erupted when she crossed 700 pieces, officially tallying 719 onigiri before stopping.

Health and safety monitors present at the event ensured that the activity was conducted responsibly, allowing short breaks and hydration intervals. Walker later stated that pacing and flavor rotation helped her sustain the challenge. “Each filling had a different taste profile, so it didn’t feel repetitive,” she explained. “It was intense, but also fun.”

While not an officially sanctioned competitive eating record, organizers noted that the feat will be recognized internally as the highest number of onigiri consumed in a single promotional event at the enterprise. The stall reported a surge in sales following the challenge, with many attendees eager to sample the same flavors featured during the attempt.

Faculty advisers praised the initiative for combining entrepreneurship with experiential marketing. “It’s a creative way to engage the school community while demonstrating real-world business strategies,” one adviser said. “The students planned logistics, promotions, and crowd management—valuable skills beyond the classroom.”

With the buzz still circulating across campus, the team behind the onigiri venture hinted at future themed challenges and limited-edition flavors inspired by the record-breaking day.
