Senator Benigno βNinoyβ Aquino, Jr. is a prominent political figure in our nationβs history. Known as a staunch political critic of then President Ferdinand E. Marcos, Sr., he was one of the first members of the opposition arrested upon the declaration of Martial Law in September 1972. He spent the next eight years incarcerated in military stockades and prison camps on various charges to which he vehemently maintained his innocence in. He continued to struggle for justice while incarcerated, famously undertaking a 40-day long Hunger Strike in 1975 in protest of the military court-martial. In 1980, he suffered a heart attack while in prison and was subsequently allowed to leave the country for treatment where he would stay in exile until 1983 when he went home amidst serious threats to his life. On 21 August 1983, he was killed upon arrival at the then-Manila International Airport. His death is widely recognized as a watershed moment in the resistance and calls for political reform that culminated in the massive turn-out for his funeral procession and later the 1986 People Power Revolution. Republic Act No. 9256 proclaimed 21 August as Ninoy Aquino Day, a Special Non-Working Holiday.
