We often think of playtime as a break from academics, but what if it's actually a secret weapon for learning? While it might seem counterintuitive to prioritize playtime over studying, research shows that regular physical activity during playtime can significantly improve academic performance.
How does it work? Physical playtime helps children improve their focus and attention. It can help release pent-up energy allowing them to return to their work feeling calmer and more receptive.

Ditch the tablets and screens! Playtime is about more than just brainpower. It's time to get those bodies moving too! The best way to encourage active play? Take it outdoors! Play catch, hide and seek, chase each other, make sidewalk chalk masterpieces, or explore the wonders of the playground. Playgrounds are like mini-gyms for little ones, helping them build strength, coordination, and engaging all their senses. And leave the phones inside - skipping, jumping, and running freely is pure joy when you're not glued to a screen. But the benefits go beyond physical activity. Nature has a calming effect, reducing stress and promoting feelings of relaxation and peace in kids. So next time, swap the screen time for some green time!

Playtime isn't just about fun (although that's definitely a perk!). It's also a training ground for essential social skills.Through play, children naturally develop essential skills like kindness, sharing, and respect for others. They learn the importance of listening and working together as a team to achieve a common goal β building the tallest castle or rescuing a lost teddy bear. Free play or activities planned during OT time can share similar benefits, as mentioned above.
Consider strategic pairing! When reviewing your caseload, identify students who could benefit from working alongside each other. Pairing a quieter child with a more outgoing one can foster increased socialization, participation, and motivation for both students as they work towards a common goal.
