Closed since 2019 to check conservation concerns, the 𝘼𝙗𝙚𝙡-𝙄𝙡𝙤𝙠𝙤 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 of your – Ilocos is now relocated to a new gallery at the North Wing of the Old Carcel Museum in the NMP Ilocos complex in the City of Vigan!

The upgraded exhibition includes handloom woven textiles done through different design techniques, with some bearing patterns that are also significant among the neighboring Itneg, the closest relative of the Iloko in terms of culture and language. A corner of the gallery is also dedicated to Manlilikha ng Bayan for Iloko textile-weaving, Magdalena Gamayo.

Celebrating the abel-Iloko tradition as a most significant intangible cultural heritage of the Ilocos, the Abel-Iloko Exhibition reflects the NMP’s commitment in honoring abel-Iloko artisans and promoting the sustainability and safeguarding of the weaving tradition.

To be launched tomorrow (19th of September, Saturday) morning with a simple program, the exhibition will be open to the public beginning in the afternoon.

The pineapple's most surprising treasure is not inside the fruit. In the Philippines—especially Aklan—makers developed piña, a fine textile drawn from fibres inside selected pineapple leaves. The leaves are scraped to expose delicate strands; those strands are cleaned, joined into longer filaments and woven by hand. Historic piña garments could be light, sheer and richly embroidered, and the knowledge remains a living tradition rather than a vanished curiosity. UNESCO inscribed Aklan piña handloom weaving on its Representative List in 2023, recognizing the skills and community knowledge carried through the craft. One familiar fruit plant therefore held two harvests: food above the leaves, and thread inside them. Before today, did you know a pineapple leaf could become cloth?

𝐁𝐀𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐎 𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐘 (𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝟏𝟔, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔) — Indigenous weaving traditions could fade with the younger generation unless schools take a more active role in passing them on, Solid North Party-list Rep. Ching Bernos warned.

With this, Bernos, vice chairperson of the House committee on indigenous cultural communities and indigenous peoples, urged schools nationwide to integrate indigenous knowledge and practices into their curricula.

Rep. Bernos cited the Peñarrubia Integrated School in Abra, which now offers weaving as a senior high school subject, including natural dyeing, weaving and embroidery using designs reflecting the culture of the Tingguian (Itneg) people.

The Peñarrubia local government has also set aside funds for tilar, or foot looms, threads and other materials so students can learn the traditional craft hands-on.

Bernos said bringing indigenous knowledge into classrooms would spark young people’s interest and help ensure that traditional skills are passed on. She also urged Congress to act on House Bill 3111, or the Philippine Neo-Ethnic Textile Development bill.

The measure seeks to recognize weaving as intangible cultural heritage and provide sustained government support for skills training, production, innovation and marketing, while expanding livelihood, training and social protection opportunities for weavers, particularly women.
