My early years of teaching
I did my very first training with 51Talk.
I learned a lot and honed my skills.
Sadly, I failed the final demo.
Everything at that time didn’t fall into place for me. A typhoon struck our area, and I didn’t have the chance to log in to my accounts or even check the materials. It may sound like an excuse, but we really had no electricity for the whole week.
The funny thing about this was that the demo was held in their branch office. I carried a big bag of toys for the demo, realia and everything. The tutors there were surprised. One of the tutors shared his own experience and said that during his demo, he didn’t even have any props at all, but he still passed it. When he saw me carrying so many materials, he encouraged me and told me I could do it. Some others also wished me good luck. The rest were just giggling and chatting.
I still feel a bit embarrassed about that part, so I’ll just cut to the chase and say I didn’t make it to the final demo. 😂
But that didn’t stop me. My burning passion had just started at that moment. I decided to apply to any ESL company that would give me a chance.
I received a call from Acadsoc and stayed there for 3 years. I became a top tutor and had the privilege of being part of their ad. Somehow, those experiences gave me fulfillment, and the rest is history.
As I scroll through these old photos, I remember how bright, energetic, motivated, and inspired I was. I remember preparing hours before my first class and excitedly rehearsing on my own, pretending there was a student in front of me. I would record myself again and again, fine tuning everything until I felt I had it down pat.
I would work around the clock until I became confident and got used to teaching on the fly, even without preparation, handling different students from as young as 1 year old children to adult professionals from different countries, mainly China, Korea, and Japan.
I felt things I had never felt before. I felt proud that I was able to teach doctors, engineers, teachers, and other highly qualified individuals. The feeling was beyond words.
All the rollercoaster experiences in this field became a part of me. Work before felt like my only escape, it made me feel seen.
It went on for years and became such a big part of who I am, to the point that I would miss many gatherings and important family events. The responsibility slowly took over me.
Then I pushed myself to my limit, got hospitalized, and could barely endure the pain. Then I went back again.
Until I got lost. I wasn’t able to balance everything and slowly lost track and lost myself. I thought I was in full control, but I never expected burnout to be the reason I started losing who I am.
Aside from that, there were also struggles I faced in real life. I forgot myself.
I don’t know who I am anymore, but I will never lose hope. I will find myself again. That glow, joy, and passion in my eyes before, I will hold on to it and come back soon.
Teacher Kate: “You said ‘I goed to school.’”
Student: “Yes, past tense.”
Teacher Kate: “That’s not past tense. That’s past trauma for grammar.”
Student: “Grammar is also confused 😭”
