Bambino Chief Photojournalist Billy S. Loberes clinched first place in Pagkuha ng Larawang Pampahayagan during the Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) 2026, held September 4โ6 in Gumaca, Quezon, earning a spot in the Reconfigured Regional Schools Press Conference (RRSPC) 2026 in Lucena City.
Loberesโ victory marked a milestone for Bagong Silang National High School, as he became the first Bambino journalist to qualify for the regional press conference through the division competition. He was among more than 3000 journalists from various schools across the Division of Quezon Province who competed in different individual and group journalistic categories during the three-day event.
A three-time DSPC competitor, Loberes said he prepared for the photography competition by understanding the theme, observing situations around him, and applying basic photography elements to his entries.
โI honestly didnโt expect to make it to the regional competition. Iโm really happy and thankful to everyone who supported me, especially our school paper advisers and my fellow Bambino journalists,โ Loberes said.
His competition, however, was challenged by technical difficulties after his replacement memory card could not initially be read by his camera. His battery also ran low while he was completing his requirements.
โI was nervous because my caption was not finished yet, so I borrowed a camera from someone who had already finished and transferred my memory card there,โ Loberes added.
Moreover, his coach and school paper adviser, Sir Daniel S. Loberiz, credited the win to the variety of subjects and stories captured in Loberesโ photographs.
According to Loberiz, each photograph contained elements that the judges were looking for, while one of the entries captured a rare moment that was difficult to encounter in the competition area.
Meanwhile, other Bambino student journalists represented the school in various English individual categories. They included Rechelle Anne V. Mendiola in Feature Writing; Zyrhiel Ann D. Capito in News Writing; Jane Irish C. Casao in Column Writing; Thalia Hannah Elyze Anne L. Concepcion in Copyreading and Headline Writing; Jhaslyn Nicole H. Manalo in Editorial Writing; Anna Cassandra A. Concepcion in Science/Health Writing; Ansel Joy M. Dacumos in Sports Writing; and Reina Ashyana M. Noveno in Editorial Cartooning.
The publication also fielded representatives in Filipino individual categories, including Angela Dawn Vidal in Pagsulat ng Lathalain; Kent Wesly B. Alilio in Pagsulat ng Balita; Majesygel D. Sarne in Pagsulat ng Opinyon-Kolum; John Glenn G. Sadili in Paggawa at Pag-uulo ng Sipi; Irish B. Sagario in Pagsulat ng Editoryal; Jazmine Nelzen S. Agripa in Pagsulat ng Artikulong Agham/Kalusugan; Kaye N. Cueto in Pagsulat ng Artikulong Isports; and Audrey Eunise C. Lopez in Kartung Pang-editoryal.
Sadili and Capito also represented Bagong Silang National High School as Mr. and Miss DSPC 2026, respectively. They competed in Production, Journalistic Attire, and Creative Attire, incorporating the malong into their creative presentation.
Across their respective categories, the Bambino campus journalists showed dedication and gave their best throughout the competition, representing the school with the skills they had developed through training and preparation.
Loberesโ victory not only brought Bambino its first-ever qualification for the RRSPC but also gave a spark of inspiration to fellow campus journalists and school paper advisers to pursue more focused and rigorous training in preparation for the next press conference. His achievement showed that with continuous practice, preparation and determination, reaching the regional stage is possible.
