Also known as Thursday of Mysteries or Sheer Thursday, it is the night of the Last Supper, which symbolizes an altar of quiet surrender. A final meal shared among those in friendship, in a trance with the knowledge of what was to come. An amicable unfolding of the truth that pure love is a warm solace, but that it could also be in the form of shared bread as something more than sustenance, and a shared cup as more than a drink.
When the One they called Lord knelt before them and washed their feetโno matter how undeserving their feet lookedโit emphasized how the act of service is sacred, despite the inconvenience and even if it costs us something. That no one is too great to serve.
In these times today, when people have grown attached to power, position, and identity, what Jesus did was in a completely different way. At the supper was the presence of weakness, betrayal, and denial. Yet, despite possessing the nature of God, He assumed none of itโHe emptied Himself, and He embraced the vulnerability of human life because His way of loving was to stoop low enough if it meant seeing the whole of someone.
As this day is observed through prayer, reflection, and acts of service, we are reminded that the journey of faith is not about ascending to greatness, but descending into love. And it is there, in that sacred lowering of self, that we encounter the divine.
