Capt. Chester 'Bem' Barela, DBA '97

Captain Chester Barela: Hero of Basilan

Captain Chester Barela, then 1st Lieutenant and executive officer of the 4th Scout Ranger Company in the Philippine Army, was among the courageous soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in a fierce day-long firefight in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan, in August 2009.
Key Details of his Service and Sacrifice:
* Rank and Unit: 1st Lieutenant Chester Barela, Executive Officer, 4th Scout Ranger Company.

* Incident: He perished during a major clash with al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf rebels, with reports also indicating the involvement of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (M**F).

* Casualty: This particular engagement was one of the deadliest in recent memory, resulting in the deaths of 23 government troops (comprising both Marines and Army personnel) and a total of over 50 fatalities.

* Recognition: Lt. Barela was known as an esteemed and gallant officer. He had previously been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Star, the nation's second-highest military award, for his leadership in a successful raid against other armed groups.

* Burial: He was laid to rest with full military honors, a testament to his dedicated service to the nation.

His legacy and the memory of his service are preserved, as evidenced by a video titled "War Story: https://youtu.be/fUHDNMj6kSg?si=bGs7Ltkwed6IMMU9

The day we lost 24 soldiers, our beloved officer, Lt Chester Barela, among them."

June 1991: the sky darkened, and ash rained over Pampanga. Bacolor became a town buried in lahar, its churches, schools, and homes swallowed by nature’s force. Among the many losses was the crucifix of Don Bosco Academy, once a beacon of faith inside the Sacred Heart Chapel, known to Bosconians as "Big Chapel". It vanished under volcanic debris—leaving behind questions, memories, and grief.

But faith, as Bacolor has always shown, endures. For decades, the crucifix was kept safe at St. Joseph Parish in Cabalantian. And on September 14, it finally returned to Don Bosco Academy Bacolor.

More than wood and symbol, its homecoming carries the story of resilience. It stands as a reminder: even when buried by lahar, faith finds a way to rise.

🙏 Story inspired by details from the cited article in the comments.

Though his term ends June 30, Vice Mayor Benedict Jasper “Citizen BJ” Lagman is not hanging up his civic boots. After retiring officially and passing the gavel to incoming Vice Mayor Aurelio Brenz Gonzales, he pledged to keep serving San Fernando—even outside an elected role.

Lagman said this offer to help the new city government, under the leadership of Mayor Vilma Caluag, is “beyond politics.” As a proud Fernandino, he believes his service shouldn’t end with his mandate—it’s a lifelong commitment to his community.

This speaks volumes about Capampáñgan leadership rooted in care, responsibility, & unity. Public service shouldn’t just be a job—it’s a calling. 👇

DBA Pampanga Batch 97 fully supports our own, Vice Mayor Benedict Jasper "BJ Tiger" Lagman on his re-election bid. BJ is a seasoned legislator and is on his 1st term as the Presiding Officer of the City Council of CSFP.

We urge everyone to vote for BJ so he can continue on his advocacy for the City of San Fernando.

Good luck and Godspeed brads, Vice Mayor BJ "Tiger" Lagman!
