A Glimpse of Our Existence...
The School of Engineering was established sometime in 1956 when the University was yet Occidental Negros Institute, with Engr. Jose Varela as Head of the School of Engineering. Vicente Boot, Jr replaced Engr. Jose Varela. He was th
e head from 1957 to 1959. He was the first Dean of the College of Engineering, who ran the College from 1959 to 1972. The first engineering course offered and recognized in 1961 was Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Thereafter, one of the pioneer graduates, Engr. Rodolfo Cinco in this course garnered 6th place in Civil Engineering Licensure examination followed by another one placer in 1967. The courses that were later offered were Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with its first graduates in 1968 and 1969, respectively. Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management, a non-licensure course was introduced had also its first graduates in 1969. In 1973, Engr. Jose “Baby” Gonzaga, Ch.E. succeeded Engr. Boot, Jr. During his term, the College had also its first board topnotcher (4th) in the Mechanical Engineering Licensure Examination in the person of Engr. Nelson Beniabon and first board topnotcher (9th) in the Electrical Engineering Licensure Examination in the person of Engr. Christopher Rios. Engr. Jesus Reparado, PME, succeeded Engr. Gonzaga in 1976. The Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering course was introduced during this year but was phased out after its second year due to low enrollment. In 1977, aside from the numerous number of board placers, the College garnered its first 1st placer particularly in Civil Engineering Licensure Examination where a torch parade was conducted in honor of Engr. Lemuel Abarte, the placer. Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering had its first graduates in 1979. It was during the term of Eng’r. Reparado when the University entered into a government program known as the Educational Development Program Implementing Task Force (EDPITAF). It was through this program that the University was able to upgrade the instructional and physical facilities of the College of Engineering. A new two-storey engineering building was built in 1978 and a number of new equipments were obtained through this program. The scholarship component had twenty recipient faculty members for the Masters in Engineering at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. In October 1981, Engr. Julius B. Maridable, Ch.E. Reparado In continuance and as part of the EDPITAF program, four department heads as well as Dean Maridable together with the Director of the Computer Center went to USA for a fellowship tour and visit to different technological schools. Nicanor P. Navarro then succeeded Engr. Maridable in November 1985. It was in 1985 that the College alumni association was formed. The first alumni president was Engr. Epimaco B. Bantiling, Jr. However, the association was dormant later. In 1997, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) granted millions worth of equipment, textbooks and scholarships for the Mechanical Engineering Department for its excellent performance in the board examinations with 100 percent passing percentage for five consecutive years from 1987-1991. In 1999, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) approved two additional programs of the College; namely, Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, which had its first graduates in March 2004. The records of high performance of graduates in licensure examinations contributed to the award of distinction given by the CHED to the university having a five-year Deregulated Status (October 22, 2001 to October 21, 2006) with all the rights and benefits appurtenant thereto. From July 2002 to October 2002, Mr. Jesse Ananoria served as Officer-in-charge of the College when Engr. Navarro was on sick leave. It was in his short-term that the desire for being a member of Philippine Association of Accredited Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) was reviewed for possible going into its process. College of Engineering Alumni Association (CEAA) was reorganized as one of the requirements in the pursuit of obtaining accredited status. After Mr. Ananoria’s supervision, the accreditation was dormant for a while. Starting June 2004, the College of Engineering is administered by Engr. Christopher G. Taclobos as Dean and Engr. Owen M. Martir as Assistant Dean. At this time, the PAASCU accreditation is given full attention. The college office is given a new face lift. In 2005, PAASCU accreditation is granted to the programs of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Linkages are strengthened and agreements are forged with various companies and agencies. The AutoCAD laboratory was realized and offered special courses. For its 50th year the College of Engineering celebrates its Golden Milestone of Excellence in 2006. Today, as in the past, the College continuously gives name and prestige to the University through its exemplary performance in the board licensure examinations and government recognition received from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Philippine Regulation Commission (PRC) being ranked as one of the top performing engineering schools in the country.
