VMA Global College Training Centers, Inc., through its Community Extension and Development Office, spearheaded a Community Extension Program
Implementation at Barangay Punta Taytay, Bacolod City, on September 17, 2026.

The program featured community extension project proposals presented by the Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering departments. Topics covered during the event included community organizing, leadership, and volunteerism led by Dr. Mayrold John D. Alonsagay, alongside a disaster risk and management presentation for coastal communities by Silverio M. Tupas Jr.

Environmental management and operational practices were central to the technical sessions. Engr. Marvin J. Angay presented on solid waste management and Materials Recovery Facility operations, followed by Engr. John Carlo B. Coniendo on environmental laws, climate change, mangrove nursery management, and land care practices. Engr. Jade Patrick S. Gaviola conducted a workshop on waste segregation and resource recovery, while 3/E Unjohn Decen R. Dumdumaya provided technical training on facility operation, safety, and maintenance.

The event concluded with the formal handover of a Materials Recovery Facility and environmental materials from VMA Global College to the residents of Barangay Punta Taytay.

Veritas Maritime Corporation and TUP-Visayas applicants formalized a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) in the morning, while “K” Line Maritime Academy, in partnership with Veritas Maritime Corporation, conducted the ME+ Mechanical to Marine Engineering Bridging Program examination in the afternoon at VMA Global College and Training Centers.

The MOA signing was held at the Audio-Visual Room with 2/O Mark Lester Angala, Assistant Training Manager for Technical/SEP, Ms. Maria Khrislenn Mallari, Training Assistant, and Capt. Makoto Kono, KRBS Managing/Executive General Manager of “K” Line RoRo Bulk Ship Management (KRBS) and the candidates from TUP-Visayas.

Meanwhile, the ME+ Bridging Program examination was conducted at the Marine Engineering Building as part of “K” Line Maritime Academy and Veritas Maritime Corporation’s recruitment and assessment activities, providing mechanical engineering applicants with a pathway toward marine engineering.

The afternoon activity was attended by Capt. Edgardo T. Baratang, President of “K” Line Maritime Academy Philippines, Inc.; Capt. Nelson Ibardaloza, Vice President for Operations; Engr. Mark Anthony Mesina, Scholarship Manager; C/E Shingo Arimura, “K” Line representative; C/E Abiel S. Bugas, President/General Manager of “K” LNG Maritime Services; C/E Jude Saidy Marigmen, Training Team Representative of New Filipino Maritime Agencies, Inc.; and Mr. Jeremiah Nelson Ramirez, Crew Development & Recruitment Supervisor of Ventis Maritime Corporation.

The activities marked another step in bringing aspiring engineers closer to the opportunities and expectations of the maritime industry.

Renowned crisis management and disaster response expert Dr. Teofredo “Ted” Esguerra led 138 participants through a whole-day training on crisis preparedness and emergency response at VMA Global College and Training Centers, Inc. on September 14.

Rather than limiting the discussion to protocols and procedures, the training placed participants in the context of real-life crisis situations, examining how decisions made before, during, and after an emergency can shape its outcome.

The morning session laid the foundation for understanding crisis management through actual situations and experiences shared by Dr. Esguerra. As the training progressed, discussions shifted to more specific scenarios, including shooting incidents, rescue operations, and personnel accountability procedures during emergencies.

Particular emphasis was placed on the vulnerability of educational institutions during crises. Dr. Esguerra stressed that an emergency can extend beyond immediate threats to life and safety, potentially affecting an institution’s reputation and the trust of its community.

The 138 participants were composed of 47 student volunteers, 52 faculty and staff members, and 39 representatives from VMA’s community partners. These included representatives from the Department of Education (DepEd), various higher education institutions (HEIs), Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMOs) of different local government units (LGUs), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA), and Philippine Navy.

Organized by the VMA Quality, Safety, and Environment Office, the activity formed part of the institution’s continuing efforts to strengthen crisis preparedness and emergency response capabilities within the academic community and its partner institutions.

AUX CAPT REMEDIOS JOHANNA S VARGAS PCGA, VMA Executive Vice President and Director of the 1301st Coast Guard Auxiliary Squadron (CGAS), welcomed the participants through her opening remarks, while CDR ARTZELL M ANACAN PCG, Deputy Commander of the Coast Guard District Southern Visayas (CGDSV), delivered a message during the program.
AUX LT MARTIN DALE M YOGORE PCGA, Deputy Director of the 1301st CGAS, introduced the resource speaker and later expressed appreciation for the expertise shared with the VMA community, highlighting Dr. Esguerra’s breadth of experience spanning some of the world’s highest peaks, disaster ground zeros, tactical medical fronts, and broadcast rooms.

The program concluded with the presentation of a certificate and token of appreciation to Dr. Esguerra.

VMA Global College and PHIL-APEX joined hands through a partnership and collaboration aimed at creating new opportunities for students during a meeting held at the board room on September 11, 2026.

Engr. Alan M. Nuega, and Ms. Leevy Manansala representatives from PHIL-APEX, visited VMA to discuss the partnership. They were warmly welcomed by VMA President, Capt. Niño Elson O. Salabas, Ph.D., together with Mr. Rene III B. Alcala, Director of the Office of Student and External Affairs, Ms. Jellyme Sioco, International Relations Officer, and 2/M Eugine Jemino, On-Board Training Supervisor. The meeting was facilitated by Career and Placement Staff.

VMA and PHIL-APEX aim to strengthen industry connections while providing students with opportunities to gain practical experience and better prepare for their future careers.

The VMA Research and Development Office, headed by Dr. Elmer John Basa, organized a research training on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in research writing for faculty and staff on September 11 at the Audio Visual Room.

Anchored on RDO Policy No. 11: Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Research, the training aimed to strengthen the participants’ ability to use AI as a research aid rather than a substitute for scholarly thinking. It explored how AI can assist in generating research ideas, reviewing literature, analyzing information, and improving academic writing while maintaining the quality and integrity of scholarly work.

The session featured Dr. Reysa Alenzuela, Research Consultant of PATHS Consulting, Serbia, as the resource speaker. Through the training, faculty and staff were encouraged to embrace emerging AI technologies responsibly and develop greater confidence in integrating these tools into their research practices without compromising credibility, and academic integrity.

VMA Global College and Training Centers, Inc. and West Visayas State University-Himamaylan City Campus formalized their partnership through a Memorandum of Agreement signing ceremony held at the VMA banquet hall on September 11, 2026.

The ceremony opened with remarks from Dr. Remedios Johanna S. Vargas, Executive Vice President of VMA Global College and Training Centers, Inc. Following the opening remarks, representatives from both institutions proceeded with the signing of the MOA, marking the formalization of their collaboration.

Dr. Genesis G. Camarista, Campus Administrator, delivered the message of commitment, emphasizing the institutions’ commitment to the partnership and its intended goals.

Among the officials present from West Visayas State University-Himamaylan City Campus were Dr. Genevi F. Geroche, Director of Research, Innovation and Extension, Dr. Rothsel T. Cabatac, Head of Extension and Development, Dr. Jonalyn B. Duhaylungsod, Head of Research, Innovation and Development, Stella A. Recaido, Coordinator of the Public Affairs and Linkages Office, Joean Gerosola, Campus Disaster Risk Reduction Coordinator and Dr. Anra M. Rosaldes, Director, School of Hospitality Management.

Representing VMA Global College and Training Centers, Inc. were Mr. Rene III B. Alcala, Director of the Office of Student and External Affairs, Ms. Jellyme C. Sioco, International Relations Officer of the Office of International Relations, Dr. Elmer John Basa, Director of the Research and Development Office, Mr. Chester John Ferrer, Director of Community and Extension Development, and Mr. James Marasigan, Officer of the Safety Office.

Mr. Edwin P. Benitez, Dean of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management delivered the closing remarks expressing his gratitude on making the event possible.

The signing marks a step toward stronger collaboration between VMA Global College and Training Centers, Inc. and WVSU-Himamaylan City Campus, with both institutions looking to build on the partnership through future programs and initiatives.
