The Holy Father Pope Leo XIV has appointed His Excellency the Most Rev. Louie P. Galbines, D. D., until now Bishop of Kabankalan as Bishop of the Diocese of Bacolod.

The appointment is being announced today in Vatican City, Thursday, May 14, 2026 @ 12 noon (6pm Phil.)

Last April 18, 2026, the Pope John Paul II National Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family was recognized during the 60th Founding Anniversary of the USLS Graduate School. This recognition serves as a testament to our shared commitment to academic excellence and the strengthening of the "family as the school of love".

Mass for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord at the chapel of the John Paul II Institute in Kottayam, Kerala.

It’s a Happy Sunday! From Goa, I reached Cochin, followed by a three-hour drive to the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences in Changanacherry, Kottayam, Kerala. The institute is headed by Fr. Tom Kainikkara, my counterpart at the JPII Theological Institute in Bacolod, Philippines. We regularly attend the annual conferences and meetings during the central sessions in Rome.

Kerala is home to the Syro-Malabar Church, an Oriental Church in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. They have their own liturgy, canon law, and local saints. After our Mass in the chapel, Fr. Tom took me to St. Berchmans College, then we proceeded to St. Mary’s Syro-Malabar Cathedral.

The community was celebrating the feast of St. Sebastian with a vibrant display of local culture, featuring women in elaborate native dress holding colorful umbrellas. The procession concluded with the lowering of the estandarte (red banner) of St. Sebastian. Prayers and incense were offered to the image and relic of the saint by the priests, accompanied by the sounds of indigenous instruments played by the men.

Fr. Tom also graciously invited me to his home for light snacks, where I had the honor of meeting and giving a blessing to his mother, Teresa. To cap off the day, the JPII Institute administrative staff and students gave me a warm welcome during dinner with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
