MANILA -- A team of Pinoy inventors from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University bagged a special award at the Tech Plan Demo Day in Singapore held on July 29.

Team Ube Tech, which came up with a new powdering technology for ube or purple yam, bagged the Hamano Products Award which entitles them to an expert prototyping support from a Japanese super factory. This will enable the team to explore further innovations that will help them mass-produce ube.

The main prize, meanwhile, was given to startup “EcoWorth,” which developed a unique water-filtering system using carbon-fibre aerogel out of biomass.

Ube Powder

Dubbed the "matcha" of the Philippines, ube is a popular agricultural crop in the northern part of the country.

According to Ube Tech's Raffy Espiritu, the brain behind the innovation, the team envisions ube as the country's next big crop, since it is highly adaptive in different weather conditions.

The powdering technology will allow farmers to utilize lightly pigmented ube, which are considered poor quality, for commercial use. It may also help promote ube as an alternative, more lucrative crop for Filipino farmers.

Tech Plan Demo Day in Singapore is presented by Leave a Nest Co. Ltd, an organization that aims to enhance everyday life through science and education.
