Remember the days of keypad phones, downloaded ringtones, “GM” text messages, and waiting for unli calls and texts?
Today’s smartphones may look very different, but one thing remains the same, behind every way we connect are different forms of intellectual property working together.
From patented communication technologies and protected phone designs to copyrighted apps and recognizable trademarks, IP continues to play an important role in driving innovation in telecommunications.
IP helps encourage the continuous development of technologies that make communication faster, smarter, and more accessible across the world.
This World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, let’s take a closer look at how IP helps shape the way we connect, communicate, and innovate.

Technology generators of Apayao State College (ASC) participated in a re-echo session on Intellectual Property (IP) Management held at the Intellectual Property Technology and Business Management (IP-TBM) Office Conference Hall, Luna Campus on March 18-19.
ASC President John N. Cabansag underscored the importance of innovation in today’s rapidly evolving landscape, urging participants to embrace technological advancements. “We really need to embrace technology and innovation because that is the name of the game,” he said, adding that the institution must also “leverage existing homegrown systems.”
Dr. Mirasol L. Agpuldo, Director of Extension Services and KTM, said the activity aims to strengthen the college’s IP culture, improve filing quality, and help translate research into innovations that support academic productivity, commercialization, and national development.
The session featured technical discussions by Assoc. Prof. Leilani A. Parugrug on drafting prior art search reports, and Dr. Mary Anne P. Umayam on patent specification writing. The discussions were reinforced through a hands-on workshop, where participants applied the concepts presented.
Campus Administrator Rodel A. Tapuro encouraged participants to recognize their vital role in innovation. “You are at the forefront of research and development, transforming ideas into tangible solutions that can benefit our communities and beyond,” he said.
