“Oh, what a sight.”

To overcome my laziness is a dream. To be able to glance upward at the sky, with mutters under my breath while waiting for my dream, aviation, to pass by and cross my rainbow of hope instead of my room's ceiling with mold on the side and dimming lights waiting to be replaced.

It’s a sight I have always tried to ignore, to avoid. Yet no matter how many times I try to brush it off aside—it has always found its way back to me, as if it was the umbrella I lost due to negligence. And every single time too, I am met with a newly found situation to ignore—disappointment.

How ironic, isn’t it? To hate this life bestowed by the gods just because it’s drenched in a lifestyle I could never learn to adore. But how come that I—the very root of this problem—get a free pass in changing things?

Is it because this life was something I didn’t even wish for yet was given to me because of two teenagers who chose to set aside the better future to experience the “puppy love”?

But no, no one gets a free pass. It was my lack of belief that even a child like me holds the power to actually turn the tables around.

If I believed in myself a little more, maybe I could really switch things up. To change the dim lights into bright, star-like bulbs that can actually light up my sky. To buy myself a fan with no borrowed parts, only using hard-earned money.

If only my hope could tear this cruel and rigged sky open, people might start to burn. It would awaken a fire inside them. And instead of a campfire, it would be a forest fire. Bright. Hot. And full of light.

I will chase after the sky—I will let the sun’s scorching heat burn the cold life I have inside of me. And instead of burning me to ashes, I will be dripping from a river of new dreams and a profound hope.

I will trace my mistakes—step-by-step. Only then maybe I can finally see my mother’s eyes full of love, surrounded by a sense of tranquility instead of a river of held-back tears.

Maybe I can finally see my father’s face without doubts and worries. Maybe he can finally eat in peace—without debts pulling him to melancholy.

Maybe I’ll take a glance at the sky and will finally choose to stare at it longer rather than disregarding it because I am finally starting to not only see my rotten ceiling but also a chance to hold and embrace my dreams.

Instead of muttered promises beneath my breath, I will tell myself, “Kaya ko ‘to, ako pa,” loud enough to be heard by the voices in my head that are weighing me down. I will never wait for chances to come again—I will chase things that ignite a fire in me.

“I see my future. Oh, it’s bright.”

Sagot: Ito ay extension club ng Umalohokan at The Stentor , ang school publication ng Mambugan NHS, kung saan layunin ng club na tulungan ang mga aspiring writer na mabigyan ng space ang kanilang mga akda at mapaunlad pa ang kakayahan nila sa malikhaing pagsulat. Layunin din ng club na ito na hikayatin ang mga mag-aaral na magbasa ng mga akdang pampanitikan. Ang opisyal na miyembro ng club ay may pagkakataong sumali sa mga patimpalak sa malikhaing pagsulat tulad ng Gawad Teodora Alonso ng DepEd, National Festival of Talents (NFOT) ng DepEd, Young Creative Challenge ng DTI, National Letter Writing Competition ng PhilPost, atbp.
