Simula ngayong Pebrero, ipinamamahagi na ng Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) ang P1,000 buwanang pensiyon para sa mahihirap na senior citizens, matapos itong mapondohan sa 2024 General Appropriations Act na sanib-puwersang inaprubahan ng Kamara, sa pangunguna ni House Speaker Martin Romualdez; at Senate President Migz Zubiri ng Senado.

Nadoble sa P12,000 bawat taon ang pensiyon para kina lolo at lola, na dating P500 lamang, o may kabuuang P6,000 kada taon.

Ayon sa Tugon ng Masa survey ng OCTA Research nitong Marso 11-14, naitala sa 42 porsiyento ang self-rated poverty sa bansa, bumaba ng tatlong puntos kumpara sa 45% na naitala sa parehong survey noong fourth quarter ng 2023.

Ang self-rated hunger naman ay nasa 11%, katumbas ng tinatayang 2.9 milyong pamilyang Pilipino na nakakaranas ng involuntary hunger sa nakalipas na tatlong buwan, ayon sa OCTA. Mas mababa ito ng 3% sa 14%, o 3.7 milyong pamilya, na naitala sa survey noong Disyembre.

Naniniwala si House Speaker Martin Romualdez na resulta ito ng epektibong pagpapatupad ng mga program ani President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. kontra kahirapan.

Kabilang sa mga programang ito ng gobyerno ang Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), ang Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) ng Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), ang Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) ng Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), at iba pa, tulad ng libreng kolehiyo, free health insurance, at ayudang pinansiyal.

Bukod sa mga nabanggit, may sarili ring anti-poverty programs ang institusyong pinamumunuan ni Romualdez, ang Kamara de Representantes: Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair (BPSF), Cash Assistance and Rice Distribution (CARD) program, Start-up, Investment, Business Opportunity and Livelihood (SIBOL), Integrated Scholarship and Incentives Program (ISIP), at Farmers Assistance for Recovery and Modernization (FARM).

“This positive trajectory in reducing poverty and hunger underscores the impact of the government’s targeted policies aimed at enhancing economic stability and providing necessary support to the most vulnerable sectors. The decrease in the number of families who consider themselves food-poor further attests to the success of our food security programs,” sabi ni Romualdez.
