🌍✨ Global Crisis to Local Action: Interdisciplinary Solutions for Political, Environmental, and Social Challenges ✨🌍
The first Saturday of December marked a momentous event for the students of MAT-Social Studies. Spearheaded by our esteemed professors, the day was filled with knowledge-sharing and collaboration as resource speakers shared their expertise in the fields of social studies, political science, and environmental issues.
We were inspired by an opening quote from Assoc. Prof. Nino P. Maliban, who referenced a line from The Kingsmaker, sparking thought-provoking discussions and challenging the knowledge of our graduate students. Prof. Maliban explored the complexities of social sciences, social studies, and humanities, highlighting the different approaches to studying social issues. The morning session included an engaging activity, where participants tackled global problems through the lenses of social sciences.
In the second session, Mr. Billy M. Ines gave us valuable insights into the broad political challenges we face. He focused on issues in the Philippines, particularly human rights and the protection of victims' rights, leaving our graduate students with many important questions. Another pressing global issue discussed was climate change, which affects everyone worldwide. Political reforms and community engagement were identified as key solutions to address social inequalities. Promoting education and awareness emerged as a crucial action to tackle political challenges.
We were also graced by the presence of Hon. John Tobit E. Cruz, a municipal councilor from Taytay, who shared the inspiring story of four "crazy" individuals with a dream to restore the once-polluted Maningning Creek. Their efforts, which started with just a few members, have grown into a movement, making a significant impact not only by reviving the river's ecosystem but also by creating livelihood opportunities for the community.
This seminar was a truly fruitful and collaborative experience, leaving everyone with valuable insights from the experts in their fields.
