BLOG KAPAMPANGAN: ANGELES CITY AMLAT/BRIEF HISTORY
Before it was known as Angeles City, it only started as a small community commanded by Don Angel Pantalion de Miranda, Captain Mayor of San Fernando. It was named “Culiat” after a woody vine that grew abundantly in the area at the time. The Negrito Tribesman were the people who lived there.
For 33 years, Barrio Culiat was part of San Fernando with a chapel, primary school, and certain industries such as a sugar mill and wine distillery, all of which helped the barrio's economy thrive at the time. The barrio became a separate town from San Fernando on December 8, 1829, after Don Angel paid the required amount under the legislation at the time for the separation of culiat. The town's name was then changed to "El Pueblos de los Angeles" in honor of its patron saint, the Holy Guardian Angels, and to Don Angel's name. The first American to establish government in Angeles City 64 years after its declaration of independent city, Gen. Frederick D. Grant
In 1899, General Emilio Aguinaldo made Angeles the center of Philippine, bringing it to prominence. After the proclamation of Philippine Independence, a year earlier in kawit, cavite, the first anniversary celebration was conducted here. The march was led by the youngest Filipino generals, Gregorio del Pilar and Manuel tinio, and was watched by General Aguinaldo from the Pamintuan's residence, which is still standing and being repaired. From May to July 1899, it served as the Presidential Palace.
