HOW DOES TUTORING HELP STUDENTS?

There are many reasons parents choose tutoring for their children. Tutoring can help strengthen subject comprehension, boost confidence, and build important learning skills.

Tutoring gives students individualized attention that they don’t get in a crowded classroom. This helps children who struggle to keep up, as well as those who aren’t challenged enough.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TUTORING?
✅ Individual and unique learning experience
Your child will receive an individualized learning experience he or she can’t always get in a classroom setting.

✅ One-on-one attention
Tutors get to know your child’s individual learning style and can adapt teaching methods accordingly.

✅ Improves academic performance
Tutoring will prepare your child for tests and exams, while tutors work with your child on specific problem areas.

✅ Encourages self-paced and self-directed learning
With tutoring, your child will learn to take the initiative his or her school work.

✅ Improves self-esteem and confidence
Your child’s self-esteem and confidence will increase through tutoring, by providing him or her with the resources and skills he or she needs to excel in school.

✅ Positive work space
Tutoring provides an environment free of distractions, with fewer students and disruptions around so your child is better able to focus on learning.

✅ Encourages independence and responsibility
Your child will gain the ability to do school work on his or her own, without your help.

✅ Encourages the freedom to ask questions
At school, your child may not always feel comfortable asking questions in front of his or her peers.

What are you waiting for? Get a tutor now. I can help you. 😊

Your my best friend or You’re my best friend?
Your or You’re

Your is possessive, meaning that something belongs to you or the person you are speaking to. For example, “What is your name?” Or, “Are these your car keys?”

You’re is a combination of the words, you and are. This is called a contraction. So, whenever you see the word you’re, you can read it as you are and it will still make sense.

The most simple way to tell these two apart is to use them in a sentence. For example: Your dog is lovely. This makes perfect sense, but you’re (you are) dog is lovely, does not work. You’re is the words you are put together. You can use this to your advantage when testing if you’re using the right one.

SOME FURTHER EXAMPLES
1. You’re really smart.
2. The best way to prepare for tomorrow is to make sure you do your best today.
3. Live your dreams.
4. Can you post the parcel when you’re in London?

TOP TIP FOR UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR AND YOU’RE
The easiest way to remember which word to use is to remember that you’re is a contraction of the words you are.
You’re = you are. Keep this in your mind if you get a little stuck.
Whereas, your = belonging to a person.

Still confused? We're just on message away. 😊

Meal-time in France is considered part of the curriculum.

Although kids generally learn eating and tasting food at home, these skills are reinforced in schools. Kids are expected to learn not only about different foods and where they come from (schools try to source locally), but also to display good manners and etiquette.

School meals are a powerful educational support: improving behavior, ability to focus and academic performance. School meals are also an important source of nutrition for all school-age children with school meals being more nutritious than what most children buy from outside sources or pack from home. Many low-income Vermont students rely on school meals as their most consistent source of quality food.

SCHOOL MEALS IMPROVE HEALTH DURING THE SCHOOL DAY.

Prevent hunger.
School breakfast has been linked with fewer visits to the school nurse, especially in the morning.

Provide balanced meals.
School breakfast participants are more likely to consume diets that are adequate in important vitamins and minerals. Children who live in hungry households depend to a greater degree on school meals for their nutrition.

Model balanced nutrition.
Children who eat school meals have improved nutritional health.

Expand children’s palettes.
Introducing children to new healthy foods which they may not otherwise have the chance to try gives them the chance to develop preferences for a wider variety of foods.

Combat childhood obesity.
School breakfast participation is associated with lower body mass index, and less of chance of a child being overweight or obese.

Do not forget to take your meal before attending your classes. Here in BJLA, we will always remind you on this. 😊

The best educators don’t just teach, they guide. They don’t tell where to go or what to do, but help you prepare for whatever you choose to go and whatever you choose to be.

What makes a great teacher?

✔Great teachers set high expectations for all students. They expect that all students can and will achieve in their classroom, and they don’t give up on underachievers.

✔Great teachers are prepared and organized. They are in their classrooms early and ready to teach. They present lessons in a clear and structured way. Their classrooms are organized in such a way as to minimize distractions.

✔Great teachers engage students and get them to look at issues in a variety of ways. Effective teachers use facts as a starting point, not an end point; they ask “why” questions, look at all sides and encourage students to predict what will happen next.

✔Great teachers form strong relationships with their students and show that they care about them as people. Great teachers are warm, accessible, enthusiastic and caring.

✔Great teachers are masters of their subject matter. They exhibit expertise in the subjects they are teaching and spend time continuing to gain new knowledge in their field.

✔Great teachers communicate frequently with parents. They reach parents through conferences and frequent written reports home.

At BJLA, we manifest these.

From early learning to college preparation, we provide the resources and opportunity for every student to become assertive, self-motivated learners for life. 😊

He likes
She flies

Subject Verb Agreement

A singular subject must always be matched with a singular verb, and a plural subject must always be matched with a plural verb. See details below for subject verb agreement rules with examples.

The verb is affected only when in PRESENT tense, for the THIRD person.
In general, when the subject is singular, use the -s form of the verb.
He walks
She sleeps
It jumps

In general, when the subject is plural, use the base form of the verb.
They walk
They sleep
They jump

NOTE:
Watch out for irregular forms, for which the -s rule does not apply.
He studies
She has
It does
He catches
It flies

Subject-verb agreement is very important because without it, the reader can be confused. Rule: Subjects must agree with their verbs in number. Singular subjects must take singular verbs. Plural subjects must take plural verbs.

More on this? I'm here to help you. 😊

Signs of a Struggling Student

Sometimes the first sign of a struggling student is a report card, other times the signs are not so clear...a child who suddenly doesn't want to go to school, spends longer and longer amounts of time trying to complete homework, or who says the teacher doesn't like him...all are subtle signs that intervention is needed.

Some children may need specific skills taught within a subject area, while others may need help with organization, study skills, and the completion of homework.

Every child from time to time does not “want” to do their homework or to study, but if you see several of these signs on a regular basis you should consider seeking the help of a tutor.
• Becomes easily frustrated
• Lacks self-motivation
• Has difficulty staying on task
• Takes longer than normal to complete written work
• Begins to argue with you over school work
• Becomes anxious and stressed about homework
• Starts to leave books and assignments at school
• Has difficulty following directions
• Seems to work longer and harder with little or no improvement
• Is no longer organized and forgets projects and tests dates
• Turns in incomplete homework or none at all
• Makes frequent and careless errors
• Seems to have trouble with note-taking skills
• Struggles with basic reading, writing, math, or spelling skills
• Has difficulty remembering and does not retain learned skills
• Makes negative comments about the teacher or about school in general
• Receives notes home from teachers about classroom misconduct

No need to struggle. I can help you as your ESL tutor. 😊

I don't (accept, except expect) you to understand me.

These words sound/look similar, except, as you would expect, they have different meanings.

I was expecting everyone to accept except for Henry.
Accept
It means "to be in agreement" or "to admit to do something".

For example:
He accepted to sign the contract.
Having studied hard, Rebecca was accepted to the university.
The professor accepted to do a lecture about global development.
He accepted our invitation. (he said "yes" to our invitation offer)

Except
It means "to exclude something" not to include.

For example:
We all passed our class except Tom.
Everybody was willing to join the competition except Mary.
The teacher excepted the new student. (she didn't include him)

Expect
It means "to anticipate" or "to wait for something".

For Example:
Don’t expect miracles and do something!
I didn't expect to see you so soon.
They were expected to leave soon.
Can you use these three in your own sentence? Put it in the comment box and let me see. 😊

Why is grammar important?

Some say grammar doesn't matter anymore, especially in a society where texting and using slang terminology is so popular. After all, who has time to worry about misplaced modifiers with all those emojis to choose from?

However, in the professional world, correct grammar is still a critical skill to master. On the other hand, basic grammatical errors can demonstrate unprofessionalism. *Whether you are looking for a new job or marketing a product, service or writing, the way you speak and write impacts how people perceive you. *Having good grammar helps you come across as more intelligent, educated, and professional. Poor grammar can put off clients, particularly if you're a writer. A single mistake isn't a big ideal, but a litany suggests poor attention to detail. *If you plan to lead others, good communication skills, and therefore good grammar, are assets to foster. If you decide to go to college or grad school, written grammar skills will be necessary to help you write papers.

On the other hand, bad grammar errors detract from the message or image you are trying to portray. Elon Musk reportedly fired some of his employees for typos and grammar mistakes in important communications.

When you submit a paper or resume with grammatical errors, it can make you look less professional or educated. Your important words become less powerful when filled with grammar problems.

It's fine to text with poor grammar, but not so much if you're writing a pitch or cover letter for a job interview.

As your ESL tutor, we can work on your grammar skills. 😊
