After years on the floor, Uma students finally receive desks

Tony Pako, Headmaster of Uma Junior High School in Aiya LLG, Kagua-Erave District, has expressed heartfelt gratitude following the donation of 40 student desks to the school — a major milestone since its establishment in 2023.

Speaking during the delivery of the desks, Mr. Pako said the school had operated for more than three years without proper desks, forcing over 400 students to sit on the floor while attending classes and completing their schoolwork.

UMA JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES 75 DESKS IN DONATION

25 May 2026

Students at Uma Junior High School will no longer have to share desks or sit on the floor after receiving 75 new desks and assorted learning materials during a handover ceremony held at the school grounds today.

The donation was made by Papua New Guinea Oil Palm Industries Manager, Mr. Kepson Pupita, and Sunday Bulletin’s Mr. Lapan Paripia Mirupasi, in a joint effort to support education in the community.

Speaking at the event, school Principlal said the shortage of desks had been a major challenge for the growing student population. The new furniture will be distributed across classrooms immediately to ensure every student has a proper place to learn.
We are very grateful for this timely support, said the school head teacher Mr Tonny Pako, These desks mean our children can now focus on their studies in comfort and dignity. We thank Mr. Pupita and Mr. Mirupasi for investing in our future leaders.

Mr. Pupita said PNG Oil Palm Industries is committed to giving back to communities through education. Mr. Mirupasi added that the Sunday Bulletin believes in supporting schools as part of its community service responsibility.
The donation comes as Uma Junior High School continues to expand enrollment and improve infrastructure to meet the needs of students in the area.

This quote hits deep.
Before strategies, before data, before goals and paperwork… there’s connection. When students feel seen, respected, and safe with us, learning has a place to land. Relationships aren’t a “soft skill” in education. They’re the foundation.

Students Demand Clarity as Uma Junior High Principalship Remains in Limbo.

Monday, August 11, 2025

STUDENTS of Uma Junior High School in Aiya LLG, Kagua Erave District, Southern Highlands Province, have taken their concerns to the Kagua Police Station seeking answers over the unresolved principalship dispute at their school.

The controversy surrounds the leadership position between the current PBC-appointed Principal, Mr. Tonny Pako, and former Principal, Mr. Benjamin Noma, who recently returned claiming the principalship.

This confusion has left students uncertain about who holds legitimate authority as the school year progresses.

The dispute reportedly began at the start of the 2025 academic year and continues to disrupt the learning environment.

While it is unclear if the matter has been taken through legal channels, students are appealing for both principals to set aside their differences and allow Mr. Pako to complete the academic year uninterrupted.

The students are now urging the Provincial Education Advisor to immediately intervene and resolve this long-standing issue, emphasizing their expectation for a successful closure of the 2025 academic year without further disruption.

Their plea highlights the urgency to restore stability at Uma Junior High and ensure that their education is not further compromised.
