Gab & Jo Pursue MBBS Studies Abroad on the Eve of PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary

The Director of Education Pacific Agency (EPA) congratulates Miss Gabriellah Kerry and Mr Joseph Imaka who flew out on the eve of PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary to pursue MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) in the People’s Republic of China.

Miss Kerry who hails from Madang Province said it was indeed an exciting independence gift of opportunity to study MBBS in China.

“Lately many Chinese medical doctors have come to PNG to carry out medical missions and perform difficult surgeries in POM General hospital to save ordinary PNGean lives and that has prompted me to choose China to do my MBBS”, said Miss Kerry.

“I look forward to equipping myself with the latest and advanced medicine, laboratories, technology and knowledge in the field,” Miss Kerry concluded.

Coming from a little-known village of Mongai in the Buin District in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Mr. Joseph Imaka was over the moon when he flew out from POM to Guangzhou in China on the eve of PNG 50th Independence Anniversary.

“I am excited to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a medical doctor just when PNG turns 50.

We have a lot of challenges in AROB in medical fraternity with shortages of medical doctors, medicine and general health services. I plan to study well, graduate with a bachelor degree in Medicine and come back and service my people in AROB”.

“It was indeed a privilege for us to be considered through EPA program. With EPA, our application for admission, Chinese visa application, flight arrangement and pick up services in China were outstanding and second to none,” said the MBBS students.

The EPA Director said EPA has been honoured to help students not just these two but many other hundreds of students for undergraduates and post graduates from all throughout PNG and the Pacific for the past 15 years.

“EPA is contributing to the Somare Dream to educate our future doctors, engineers, academics, scientists and leaders of PNG.

EPA Director said some of the EPA’s products are Dr. Yalinu Poya, Dr. Steven Ales (Unitech Lecturer), Jeffers Teargun (Msc, PhD Candidate & Ramu NiCo HR Deputy General Manager), Loretta Rato, Msc (Ok Tedi Chemical Researcher), Marcus Rahaman (Air Nugini Safety Engineer), Samuel Ray (CEO, PNG Christian Professional Network), Lucas Kupal MBA (PNG Ports), Henry Pawako MBA (PM & NEC Office), Samson Kandato MBA (Ombudsman Commission), and many others.

On the eve of Independence Anniversary, the Director announced that EPA is proud to contribute to the human resources development of PNG.

Happy 50th Independence Anniversary!

She had a Vision: She Planned, She was Determined, She Triumphed & She Succeeded

Here is a story of a determined young lass who conquered many challenges and obstacles that were as high as the Great Wall of China to attain her Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an Aircraft University in China a fortnight ago.

We had published the story over two years ago on 25th January 2023, https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=6211066298904193&set=a.1177976995546507 when she was studying online to upgrade her qualification from Diploma to Bachelor’s degree.

Coming from a little known village of Kosena in the border of Kainantu and Okapa districts in the Eastern Highlands Province, Bethel Kimali was so fascinated about how machines work while growing up in her village. She has a vision to turn her passion in machinery into a career.

It started back in 2016 when she had applied to study for Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at the PNG Polytechnic Institute in Lae.

Amidst the challenges she had faced due to tribal and election related conflicts in 2017 in her village, she was determined and committed to finish her studies. Driven by her vision, she graduated with her Diploma in 2018.

The challenges of landing on a mechanical engineering job were taking a toll in her life. However amidst her challenges, she had held her head above the water and remained positive until Puma Energy Limited interviewed and recruited her for the role of Mechanical Technician in their refinery plant.

She grasped the opportunity with both hands knowing well that the refinery plant was a stepping stone for her bigger vision – to attain a bachelor’s degree.

However Ms Kimali had dedicated her life to Puma Energy Limited and worked faithfully until 2022 when she resigned to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

“Studying in China was both challenging and rewarding”, said Ms Kimali. “Adapting to the new language and lifestyle pushed me out of my comfort zone.

However through my adjustments and resilience, I find myself accessing to the world-class engineering programs, cutting-edge technology and the booming industrial sector was the perfect place to turn my passion into career and realize my goal”.

Ms Kimali said her coursework was rigorous with strong focus on both theory and hands-on practice in the cutting-edge laboratories. I had exposure to advance manufacturing, automation and other technical areas where China is leading globally.

My program gave me a solid foundation in core concepts plus hands-on experience with laboratories and projects. My studies focused on practical engineering that taught me real plant and machinery skills on top of the theories.

“I am a determined person and I will achieve what I want in my life”, Ms Kimali elaborated.

“No boyfriend, no social media and no peer pressure will come my way in my quest to achieve my goals. Right now I am focusing on landing on a job that is related to my major. After a couple of years, I want to have a master’s degree and a PhD under my belt", a determined Kimali concluded.
