This is a serious one. The traditional auto giants in the US and Japan are riding on the reliability card for now, but as these Chinese car accumulate more time on the road people are gaining confidence. The Chinese cars also balance their lack of reputation with prices that are 40-50% cheaper and warranties that are twice as long.

Recent car quotes as I was looking around:

Honda Pilot - Approx. $73K (🤨🤨🤨)
Acura MDX - $79K
Lexus GX 550 - $110K
Land Rover Defender - $120K-180K
Ford Explorer - $70K

Jetour G700 (positioned as a defender/land cruiser alternative) - $65,500
Jetour T2 - $42K
Jetour T1 - approx $35K
212 - Approx $30K (vs. $80K Jeep Wrangler)

If we jump into the electric side prices drop even more.

After test driving most of these cars I won’t say any of them are flawless. But, the price difference really makes you pause. All cars are a waste in terms of rapid depreciation. So saving and investing the $50K difference over 10 years rather than pi***ng it into the air on depreciation to look cool is really something to consider.

The old giants have to rethink their playbook and value chain to survive this wave.
