Aluth Avurudu at Drummond Kindergarten
Our community gathered in a spirit of respect and unity to celebrate Aluth Avurudu, the Sinhalese New Year.

The day began with the karakia Whakataka te Hau, grounding us in gratitude as tamariki, whānau, and kaiako came together.

The celebration was rich with symbolic traditions:

Boiling of Milk: We watched the milk overflow, a beautiful symbol of prosperity and abundance for the year ahead.

Lighting the Oil Lamp: This traditional act marked a new beginning, welcoming light, wisdom, and peace into our space.

Cycles of Renewal: We explored how this festival connects to the changing seasons, reflecting on growth and new life.

Throughout the day, the air was filled with music, games, and the aroma of traditional food. These authentic experiences, made possible by the generosity of our community members, allowed our tamariki to practice manaakitanga (hospitality) and whanaungatanga (relationship building).

By sharing these cultural treasures, we continue to weave a strong, inclusive community where every child feels they belong and can stand tall in their identity.

Community, culture, and connection πŸ¦†πŸŒΏ

At Drummond Rural Kindergarten, we know that culture comes in many shapes and forms, and one tradition we love celebrating each year is our annual Duck Shooters Breakfast.

Families, whānau, and members of our wider community were invited to join us for a delicious cooked breakfast, dressed head-to-toe in camo gear, as we celebrated this special rural tradition together.

These moments provide wonderful opportunities for our tamariki to connect with the unique customs and experiences that make our community so special. Sharing stories, food, laughter, and traditions helps strengthen the sense of belonging that is at the heart of our kindergarten.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the morning such a memorable celebration. We love creating opportunities for our tamariki to learn about and embrace the diverse cultures, traditions, and experiences that shape our rural community. πŸ’š
