Chinese New Year 2026 – The year of the Horse.

We established a new yearly ritual, with the input of our kaiako, our tamariki and our whanau. This provided tamariki, kaiako and whanau with opportunities to explore Chinese cultural traditions and deepen their understanding of the wider world.

We celebrated and learnt about Chinese culture over a two-week period through multiple provocations and invitations such as: tamariki made lucky red envelopes to take home to whanau. Tamariki did the lions dance and learning about the zodiac animals and the stories behind them, and we explored the meaning of the year of the horse (which represents success). We also explored Chinese characters, including writing the “Fu” character, which symbolises good luck, and children were invited to write their names in Chinese. Tamariki were invited to the red and yellow dress up day, we wore these colours, which symbolise good fortune, happiness, and prosperity in Chinese culture. Together we made delicious wontons and gathered to eat them. Their shape is said to be like the ancient ingots, symbolising good fortune of the year ahead.

May this festival of Holi splash the colours of peace, happiness and positivity in our lives for 2026.
We recently celebrated our Holi ritual, over a two day period. We started with reflecting on negativity or things we were scared of, we wrote these down then tossed them into the fire pit, this represents the triumph of good over evil. All tamariki and kaiako gathered to release negative energy, by doing lions pose and roaring like lions.
Our tamariki made vegetarian Indian curries to share as we gathered with whānau for our Holi Hai full moon party. Gulal was prepared on the table, a colorful powder made from natural, plant-based ingredients, these are our Holi colours. Throwing the colours and wishing everyone a Happy Holi invites us all to play like children during this vibrant experience.

A canoe which we are all in without exception. This whakataukī emphasizes unity and that the outcomes of the Treaty affect everyone together.
At Kauri Learners we honor te Tiriti o Waitangi, and actively ensure this is relevant and living for our Kauri Learners tamariki.
Our kaiako and tamariki recently went for a hikoi to our local museum, to visit Becs. They were invited to experience a special Tiriti Signing exhibition, in acknowledgement of te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Te ao Māori are woven through our daily practices and our curriculum Te Whāriki. We oppose any attempts to weaken te Tiriti and stand firm in our support for its central role in education.

This demonstrates her strong commitment to provide the best positive outcomes for our Kauri Learners whānau. Congratulations Kelly, your leadership and dedication have been transformative for us.

This week we celebrated our wonderful kaiako Lochie. Lochie has now finished her studies to become a qualified ECE kaiako. It brings us so much joy to support, nurture and guide our kaiako in their learning journey, as we do for our tamariki 💛 ka pai tō mahi, arohanui your kauri whānau.

Our festival of lights ritual, we filled our hearts with warmth and togetherness. The smell of indian spices filled the air from the traditional indian dishes our tamariki made. We decorated our environmemt with flowers, candels and our tamariki made indian artwork. The sound of indian music invited us to gather and dance with scalfs draped over our shoulders. 🎂💛Hari huritau ki a koe💛🎂
We recently celebrated our 10th Birthday here at Kauri Learners!! What a celebration it was, our tamariki and kaiako came dressed for the occasion. In recognition of our 10th Birthday we planned to unveil a surprise mural, that was created by Jason Tahatika (check out his Instagram page ). This artwork represents who we are here at Kauri Learners. Our Japanese connections, te ao māori and Whitianga culture. We were lucky enough to have visitors from Japan and one of our Directors joined us too. They gifted us some traditional Japanese clothing for our tamariki. Our 10th Birthday celebration was a true celebration of the community of culture and aroha, that we have created over the past 10 years. Here's to many more years of nurturing and caring for the tamariki and whānau of our Whitianga community.
