The Mercury Bay Area School (MBAS) Senior Boys Football team capped off a successful season by claiming the 2026 Waikato Secondary Senior Boys Division 4 Championship with a 3-0 victory over Morrinsville College.

The championship crown followed a packed schedule for the team:

Thames Valley Champions:

Successfully defended their regional title. Two weeks ago before heading away to Nationals.

National Trident Tournament (Rotorua):

Built sharp discipline on the national stage, picking up wins against Feilding High School (4-0) and Bethlehem College (4-2), while dropping close, tight-margin matches to Onslow College (1-2), Papamoa College (0-1), Kingsway School (0-1), and AGC Strathallan (2-3).

Waikato Division 4 Final:

Backed up their national tournament games straight away, shutting out Morrinsville 3-0 to secure the league trophy.

Te Puritanga o Hei wishes to congratulate and celebrate the team's championship run, giving special recognition to our own Te Puritanga o Hei student Curtis Treherne for his outstanding efforts throughout the campaign.

What an extraordinary day at Ahurei o Waiau! 🌟🌿

Though nerves were high, our young Te Puritanga o Hei rōpū took to the stage with incredible courage, representing our kaupapa, kura, whānau, and hāpori with immense pride. We were absolutely blown away by the vigour, energy, and passion they poured into every single moment of their performance set!
Some absolute highlights from the stage:

🔥 The Haka: Huge mihi to our three tama who stood tall, leaves on the stage, and gave it every ounce of their heart and soul—pure power! The haka delivered was special to myself and I thank the boys for this!

🗣️ Whaikōrero: Superb delivery by our kaikōrero, holding the mana of our group with dignity.

✨ Waiata-ā-ringa: By far the most polished item of the day, executed with grace, precision, and beauty by our kōtiro.

Lifting the Standard & Creating Pathways 🎓✨
For several of these students, their performance will be formally assessed for NCEA unit standard credits. This marks an exciting new pathway for our school as we lift the standard of performance, empowering ākonga to choose Te Ao Haka as an authentic, high-value learning pathway.

Our vision is to build strong foundational skills in the Junior/Middle years so that in the years to come, we will have a powerhouse Senior Kapa Haka group representing us at the Hauraki Festival in the future.

Ngā Mihi & Acknowledgments 🙏

Building a thriving kapa haka culture takes passion and expertise behind the scenes:

A massive shoutout to Whaea Jo Kaaho for her continuous, fabulous work building the kaupapa in our junior and middle years.

Welcome to Matua Mike Bennett, who has recently joined us to drive the development process for our senior ākonga. His final words of support for our young tamariki were also inspirational.

I also wish to make a special mention to our whānau who were there on the day to support. Those of you helping with makeup and dressing our tamariki. Ngā mihi to you all.

To all our performers: We are incredibly proud of you all! You represented your whānau and kura with true mana. Keep shining! 🖤❤️🤍
