🌿 We’re looking for a Kaitiaki | Whenua & Rangatahi Mentor – Kawakawa

We’re looking for the right person to join our WithIN NATURE whānau and work alongside rangatahi at our Kawakawa Regenerative Learning Hub.

This is a hands-on role for someone who loves being outdoors, enjoys working with the whenua, and has a natural ability to connect with young people.

You might come from youth work, education, horticulture, māra kai, conservation or environmental work — or you might simply be a practical, grounded person who understands how much young people can learn when they’re given the space to explore, create, contribute and get their hands dirty.

Our approach is holistic, practical and nature-based. We use the whenua as a place for learning — growing kai, building, restoring, cooking, creating and spending meaningful time in te taiao. Experience with holistic, nature-based or child-centred approaches to learning would be a real advantage.

🌱 Based in Kawakawa
🌱 16 hours per week
🌱 Supporting and mentoring rangatahi
🌱 Māra kai, growing and environmental restoration
🌱 Practical, creative and nature-based learning
🌱 Helping rangatahi build confidence, connection and practical skills

We’re less interested in finding someone who ticks every box and more interested in finding someone who genuinely connects with our kaupapa and our rangatahi.

🌱 We’re looking for our next Chairperson | WithIN NATURE

WithIN NATURE is entering an exciting new chapter, and we’re looking for the right person to join us as Chair of our Board of Trustees.

Our kaupapa is centred around rangatahi, whenua, kai, wellbeing and connection — creating hands-on learning opportunities that help young people build confidence, practical skills, leadership and a stronger relationship with te taiao.

As our programmes and partnerships continue to grow across Te Tai Tokerau, we’re looking for a Chair who can help guide the organisation through its next stage.

We’re looking for someone who brings strong governance and leadership, but just as importantly, someone who connects with our kaupapa and understands the importance of community-led mahi.

This is an opportunity to help shape the future of a growing charitable organisation and support a kaupapa we believe can create lasting impact for rangatahi, whānau and communities.

Another incredible term in the books. So proud of everything our rangatahi achieved, created, and grew together.

Growing more than gardens.

In 2024, with support from the Kai Ora Fund, we partnered with Whakapara Marae to strengthen local food resilience through thriving community gardens. Alongside Tokotoko Solutions, we also restored our waterways by planting native species, helping to protect our whenua for generations to come.

Every project is about creating lasting impact for our people, our environment, and our future.

This award goes to the one who’s always first to lend a hand, last to leave a mess, and unofficially keeps everyone else in line (whether they asked for it or not!).

We’ve watched you grow from someone with little connection to this space into a true kaitiaki of both the whenua and the people.

The past 4 out of 5 days brought low energy, delays, and some challenging weather - just as the maramataka suggested.

We’re so grateful to now be stepping into the next 8 days of high, productive energy and fresh momentum.

This is one aspect of mātauranga Māori that we love weaving into our programmes here at WithInNature. Understanding the maramataka helps us work with the natural rhythms around us, rather than against them.

A huge shout out to our rangatahi who pushed through and absolutely smashed their projects, finishing off their planter boxes despite the slower energy of the past week. Ka mau te wehi!

Nothing beats seeing our rangatahi growing in confidence and having fun in the kitchen.

This group has been with us since the days of our old kitchen, and it shows. From prepping ingredients to working together as a team, they absolutely owned it in our new commercial-grade kitchen.

Today’s menu was a hearty cottage pie, made with plenty of laughs, teamwork, and aroha. The plan was to send everyone home with leftovers… but the cottage pie had other ideas. Safe to say it was too good to leave behind!

So proud of these young people and how far they’ve come. Full bellies, happy hearts, and another great day in the kitchen.
