New date just added!
The New Zealand String Quartet is making a beeline to Barrytown after they enjoyed performing so much for locals last year.
This time they’re presenting ‘Storytellers: Anthology’ – a programme of wonderful music that’s guaranteed to chase the winter blues away.
First up on the programme is Henry Purcell's intricate Chacony in G Minor, which served as inspiration for Benjamin Britten, when he wrote his second string quartet, from which the Quartet will perform a movement. Following is the playfully rhythmic Perpetual Motion from String Quartet No. 3 by Anthony Ritchie, one of Aotearoa’s most well-known composers, and a couple of movements from F***y Mendelssohn’s only string quartet, which displays her poetic and passionate voice. Dvořák‘s String Quartet no. 12, opus 96, the beloved “American Quartet“, features ear-catching melodies that recall the spirit of exploration and adventure. The concert finishes with a few Scandinavian folk songs reimagined by the Danish String Quartet on their acclaimed album Last Leaf, that wander through joy, sorrow and nostalgia.
The members of the Quartet will introduce each piece to you and share the human stories behind them. They’ll also be introducing Martin Smith to the West Coast on his first tour as the official NZSQ cellist, along with guest violinist Peter Andreas Nielsen.

Last night we played in the rain !!
The show must go on and it was awesome, the sound was fantastic .
The fiddlers played on Carbon Fibre Violins/bows - still horse hair on the bow with lots and lots of rosin (all provided by the Royal Edinburgh Miltary Tattoo) Some bridges are wooden, some carbon fibre- all survived.
