We are incredibly proud to celebrate Wellington College Old Boy Sir James Chapman, who was recently awarded a knighthood in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours for his services to literacy education!

Since the 1980s, Professor Emeritus James Chapman has made significant contributions to literacy teaching and learning, both here in New Zealand and across the globe.

His pioneering research into dyslexia and learning difficulties completely transformed how we understand reading, directly shaping the structured literacy approaches used in Kiwi classrooms today. As an international leader, he spent over two decades on the Executive Board of the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities, including a standout term as President.

Sir James has spent decades advising the Ministry of Education and driving national policy, most recently serving on the 2024 Ministerial Advisory Group to develop evidence-based teaching frameworks. Even after formally retiring as Massey University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, his relentless work earned him the prestigious Learning Difficulties Australia Eminent Researcher Award for 2024.

Graduating from Wellington College in 1966, Sir James was a Prefect and our Senior Champion for the '440-yard dash'! His classmates sum him up best, describing him simply as a "good man."

Please join us in congratulating Sir James Chapman!

Samoa Language Week 2026 🇼🇸

E afua mai i mauga tetele, manuia o le 'nu'u.
From the high mountains are the blessings of the village.

This Samoan proverb means that our FaaSamoa (Samoan way of life) is a blessing that is passed down from generation to the next generation.

Fa'afetai tele lava to all our Staff members, Prefects, and students who attended our Flag Raising yesterday morning, it is always special to share our Pasifika cultures with everyone. Thank you to our Samoan students who took part in the morning Staff Briefing. Malo le galue, malo le taumafaiga.

We look forward to more celebrations of Samoa Language Week at WC over the coming days!
