Dear Parents

As previously indicated, Western Heights School has developed procedures to allow us to respond safely and quickly to various challenging or emergency circumstances.

Today, our entire school participated in a realistic Lockdown training session, and the response was very positive. Our students responded safely and maturely.

The lockdown is now part of our emergency procedures process. We will implement emergency protocol exercises at least twice a year to ensure all staff and students remain familiar with our processes.

Should you hear of a lockdown or evacuation at the school, please do not attend the school or phone us, as we will not be able to respond. Your presence or contact may make it more difficult for us or the emergency services to manage a situation.

Any information about an emergency at the school will be updated on our website as regularly as possible.

It is important that we practice these emergency procedures so that we are well-prepared should a real emergency situation arise.

We thank you for your support as always,

Ash Maindonald

Principal

Kia Ora Friends and Families

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday 24 February, at 10 am, we will hold a Lockdown Drill. This is our first practice of the year, and it's to iron out any small issues. That will mean our school is fully prepared should a real Lockdown ever be needed.

Our children have been thoroughly briefed, so they won't be worried and should be able to make it a successful drill.

Thank you for your support, as always

Western Heights School officially supports continuing to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
On 25 November, our Board passed the following as policy:
Even though the Education and Training Act no longer requires school boards to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, our Board chooses to uphold this obligation as central to who we are.

We therefore commit to continue to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our governance and decision-making by:
• ensuring that our plans, policies, and local curriculum genuinely reflect local tikanga Māori, mātauranga Māori and te ao Māori, developed in partnership with mana whenua and our Māori whānau
• taking all reasonable steps to make rich, meaningful learning in te reo Māori and tikanga Māori available for our ākonga
• actively working to achieve equitable outcomes for Māori students and monitoring our progress toward this.

Our commitment to Te Tiriti is not a compliance exercise. It reflects our belief that honouring Te Tiriti improves learning and wellbeing for all ākonga, strengthens our relationships with whānau and iwi, and gives every child a deeper sense of belonging in Aotearoa.

We greatly appreciate all the encouragement and support we have already received from MƄori and non-Māori members of our Western Heights community.
Thank you all.
