PhD, EdD, Masters and Honours students from the University of Waikato and other Aotearoa New Zealand universities are warmly invited to join Te Wānanga o Ngā Kete (the Division of Arts, Law, Psychology and Social Science) and Te Wānanga Toi Tangata (the Division of Education) for a collaborative celebration of graduate student research.

We invite 200-word abstracts from students studying at any New Zealand university in Education, Law, the Arts, the Social Sciences, Psychology, or related disciplines. The conference provides an opportunity for postgraduate students to come together from across New Zealand to share their ideas and research in a supportive, professional and congenial environment

The 2024 conference will be held at Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato The University of Waikato (Hamilton Campus) and participants will also be able to be present via zoom. Presenters will each be allocated 15 minutes to present their research, followed by five minutes for questions. The keynote addresses will be given by Rachel Tan, Lecturer in Law and current doctoral candidate, and Dr Andrew Doyle from Education.

There will be approximately 30-50 presentation slots at the conference: these will be allocated upon receipt and acceptance of each individual submission, so it is a good idea to send in your abstract as soon as you have it ready.

Title: The Importance of Non-Adaptive Processes in the History of Evolution: the Debate on the Importance of the Exaptation Concept



Abstract: I provide an argument for using the evolutionary concepts of constraints and by-products. I will suggest that the hierarchical theory developed by the paleontologist Niles Eldredge can both shift the focus to different evolutionary aspects of a trait and highlight important processes other than adaptation. Second, I will show how Pievani and Sanguettoli (2020) framework follows Eldredge arguments and it enables us to identify constraints and by-products, and consequently to this identification to provide indirect arguments to corroborate or confute different hypotheses of the evolutionary history of a trait.

We have just returned from a two-week break (I know graduates don't typically have breaks, but at least there was no teaching). This means that we need to gather our motivation to work well for the remainder of the trimester.

Hi everyone,

Hope your studies are going smoothly! I can feel the holiday buzz building up. Even though grad students don't officially get a break, let's embrace the festive spirit together...

How about we create our own little holiday celebration this Friday (December 15) at our snazzy new office space (I2 LEVEL) starting at 5 pm?

Dress to impress in your favorite Christmas attire, bring along some tasty snacks and drinks, and if you're up for it, toss in some board games for added fun!

The Division of Arts, Law, Psychology, and Social Science is pleased to announce that it will host WriteFest! the week of 20 – 24 November 2023 on the Hamilton and Tauranga campuses. WriteFest! will take place in the new Postgraduate Common Room (I2.22) on the Hamilton campus, and the event will take place in TCBD.G.04 on Mon, Tues, Weds, and Fri and TCBD.2.09 on Thurs on the Tauranga campus. Postgraduates are welcome to attend for a block of protected writing time Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 12:00pm.



WriteFest! is a week-long event that encourages postgraduates to focus upon their writing, whether it is for a standalone project or for their thesis / dissertation project. Each day of the event will have a facilitator who will share a tip, trick, or strategy that they use in their own writing. Here is the draft schedule of the daily facilitators for WriteFest!:

The two campuses will be linked via Zoom so no attendee will miss out on the daily facilitator’s strategy! After the daily facilitator shares their writing strategy, attendees will be encouraged to use the rest of their time to focus on writing. There will also be a pre-event briefing to take place via Teams on either Thursday, 16 November or Friday, 17 November, depending upon the outcome of the survey associated with the registration above.
