Sunday 23rd August 2026 sees the next Auckland Regional Bindery get-together for anyone who would like to know the basics of the art of book binding. You will learn about terminology, tools and materials, different styles of binding, structure of paper, grain, grammage, paper handling and repair principles.

Practical work is making a Crown Book, aka the Blizzard book which allows you to present and store postcard size cards/art etc.

All tools and material are provided - there’s no need to bring anything. The fee also covers access to the Howick Historical Village.
There will be a 30 minute lunch break - bring your own or there is a nearby cafe.

10.30am ~ 3.30pm

Cost $40 plus admin fee.

This is the 5th year that printers and binders have collaborated on a theme to produce a wonderful array of prints and books. A record number of people have taken part this year, including one printer from Australia.

Everyone who takes part ends up with at least one book of prints and they are all different. Some books have already been delivered and the rest are set to be launched out into the world by 1 August.

Hopefully there will be a pop-up exhibition at the upcoming Wayzgoose in Whanganui in September ~~~ watch this space!

At the recent AGM Marion Manson delivered a fascinating insight into her piano hinge sculptures. Her talk also covered the value of mentors and the importance of giving back to the community.

Very appropriately titled 'Don't Ask Me How Long It Took', her presentation is available on the ABC website for all to enjoy.

Wayzgoose:

Dating back to at least the 17th century, the event was originally thrown by a master printer for their workmen to mark the end of summer and the beginning of the season of working by candlelight.
Today, it survives primarily as a whimsical name for festivals, community meetups or annual gatherings hosted by modern letterpress, book arts and printmaking societies.

The derivation of the term is doubtful. It may be a misspelling for "waysgoose".....
The most likely origin is the word "Weg(s)huis".....
Another plausible origin is a more general word for a merry making.....

What isn't in doubt is that the 2026 Wayzgoose is happening in Whanganui 18-20 September. It is hosted by the Association of Handcraft Printers this year and whilst the programme is still a WIP, there WILL be merrymaking!

When you realise that you just don’t need any more blank handmade books…..you can always take up letterpress printing…..who knows where it might lead…..

Last weekend, 15-17 May, the Printing Society at Ferrymead Heritage Park was delighted to have Graham Judd from .press run three letterpress workshops. It was a wonderful chance to be taught by the unflappable Graham, to reconnect with old friends and make new ones and to explore the delights of the Print Shop.
Many thanks to Graham for making the journey south, to Gary from the Society for helping make everything run smoothly and to Bernadine for the delicious soup on Saturday.

I wonder if the mini Adana press will be recognised by its former owner?
