Before I started in 2023, plans were already underway to replace our old switchboard, some of which dated back to the late 1960s and was well overdue for an upgrade.

There were a few hurdles to jump through, but we managed to find the perfect team to do the job.

The new switchboard shed was built a couple of months ago thanks to Scott Taylor, and this week PBS is installing the new switchboard.

Of course, we picked the wettest week of the year to do it, but the boys have been awesome and pushed through despite the weather.

I’m currently sitting here in the dark after making a trip into town to charge my laptop and phone, but I’m genuinely excited to see this project finally completed. It’s a massive improvement for the facility and something that has been a long time coming.

So, next time you’re up at the facility, there’s a good chance I’ll show you the new switchboard. You probably won’t ask to see it, and you may not even particularly want to see it, but I'm going to show you anyway. :-)

As a monitor to see what we still had lurking in our backyard, I set up a trail cam. It’s amazing what comes out under the cover of darkness (and in the daytime).

Check out our new kitchen floor!

A huge thank you to Carpets and Drapes Fiordland, Te Anau Plumbing Ltd, and Precision Flooring for an awesome job.

The old vinyl had well and truly reached the end of its life, so out came the kitchen, in went the new flooring, and the whole place got a much-needed scrub and clean.

What a transformation! It looks absolutely amazing.

Thanks again to everyone involved, we’re thrilled with the result!

Yesterday we had a visit from Joy and Dave Crouchley, who kindly donated a copy of Jake Whyte Pig Hunter to Te Kūwaha Mātauraka.

Joy and Dave are Te Anau locals. Dave is a keen hunter and Joy is a retired teacher. Together, they wrote the book with the aim of “inspiring young people to read and seek their own outdoor adventures.”

It’s a great fit for our library and the young people who come through Te Kūwaha Mātauraka. The book will be available for you to read.

A huge thank you to Joy and Dave for the generous donation and for helping inspire the next generation to get outdoors and enjoy the adventures that Fiordland has to offer.

Some of you locals may have noticed the John McGlashan gazebo and van at the start of the Mitre 10 10km event last weekend.

Being part of and supporting our local community is hugely important to us at Te Kūwaha Mātauraka. As part of this, we were more than happy to help the awesome Claire Ngakai with the organisation of the event.

The gazebo provided a warm and sheltered spot for athletes at the start, while the van came in handy as a gear drop.

Even better, the funds raised from the event went towards the Fiordland Trails Trust, who do an incredible job building and maintaining the Lake2Lake Trail, a trail that our groups regularly use as part of our outdoor education programmes.

It was great to be able to play a small part in such a fantastic community event, while supporting an organisation that does so much for our local area.

Thanks so much to everyone who has called or messaged to check in. We’re all safe and doing well.

It was a big shake that definitely caught us by surprise, but thankfully there doesn’t appear to be any significant damage, just a few things that were knocked over.

The earthquake was a magnitude 6.3 and was centred about 15 km west of us, so it was certainly a decent one. We really appreciate everyone thinking of us.

Snow on the Murchison Mountains is more than just a sign that winter has arrived.

It marks the changing of the seasons in Fiordland, a reminder that nature always keeps its own time. The first dusting of white transforms the rugged peaks, feeds the rivers below, and quietly prepares the land for the months ahead.

From Te Kūwaha, it’s a view that never grows old. A fleeting moment of beauty, yet one that speaks of resilience, renewal, and the wild heart of this remarkable place.

Whether it’s bathed in sunshine, wrapped in cloud, lit by the moon, or pouring with rain, we still think the view from our Kōhaka Lodge is hard to beat.

Imagine waking up each morning, walking into the kitchen with a hot coffee in hand, and being greeted by this view. Every day brings something different, and every season has its own magic.

Come and experience it for yourself.

We are currently hosting Haileybury School from Melbourne at Te Kūwaha Mātauraka. This is the second Haileybury school group to stay with us in the past week which is pretty cool to have some visitors from over the ditch.

Both groups have made the most of their time here with the outstanding team at Trips & Tramps. Their local knowledge, professionalism, and passion for Fiordland help create unforgettable experiences while supporting and protecting the special environment we all enjoy.

If you're staying with us and want an authentic adventure with a team that truly cares about the region, we highly recommend Trips & Tramps.
