Something exciting is happening at GroomFest NZ this year! ✂️🐩
Because every professional groomer deserves credentials that reflect real professional knowledge.
For groomers who believe certification should not only encompass breed-specific trims, but also skin and coat science, infection control, salon hygiene, bacteria and microorganisms, product ingredients, canine behaviour and communication, modern handling, anatomy and body systems, breed recognition and emergency care, the Modern Master Groomer pathway was created for you.
Take a look at the full curriculum at www.groomwiseacademy.nz and see what Modern Master certification is all about.
If you’ve passed your Modern Master theory exam, you’re nearing completion, or you’ve been thinking about jumping in and giving certification a go, this is your opportunity.
I will be assessing GroomWise Modern Master Groomer Level 1 Practical Certification, a traditional Teddy Bear trim on a wool-coated dog.
We’ll be looking at coat preparation, technique, balance, finish and the ability to create a beautiful Teddy Bear salon trim.
Professional grooming is about far more than the finished trim. It’s about what you know, why you do it and the standards you work to.
If you’ve been sitting on the fence, maybe GroomFest is the time to back yourself and give it a go.

What a wonderful morning with the Probus North Rotorua Club! 🐾💚
A huge thank you to everyone at the Probus North Rotorua Club for the warm welcome today. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the morning with such a fantastic group of people.
Over the hour, we explored how to keep our dogs healthy, comfortable, and looking their best between grooming appointments. We covered practical home grooming tips, recognising changes in your dog's skin and coat, and knowing when it's time to seek professional or veterinary advice.
Our gorgeous little Trixie was the star of the show, helping with a live line-brushing demonstration while we answered lots of thoughtful questions from the audience. I always enjoy hearing everyone's stories about their own dogs, and today's discussion was full of great conversations and genuine enthusiasm.
Thank you again to the Probus North Rotorua Club for inviting GroomWise Academy to present. It was a privilege to share my knowledge with such an engaged and welcoming community. Probus clubs provide wonderful opportunities for retired and semi-retired people to connect, learn, and enjoy interesting guest speakers, making today's event even more special.
I hope everyone went home feeling a little more confident about caring for their furry family members.

I'm so excited to have the opportunity to learn from another incredible expert and continue adding to my own knowledge. No matter how long you've been grooming, there is always something new to learn, and I believe that's what makes our profession so rewarding.
A huge thank you to the Modern Pet Groomers Association of New Zealand for bringing opportunities like this to its members. Investing in education is one of the best investments we can make, not just for ourselves, but for every dog that comes through our doors.
Professional grooming reaches far beyond creating a beautiful haircut. It's about understanding the whole dog standing in front of you. It's recognising body language, understanding how dogs communicate, knowing when they're comfortable, when they're're anxious, when they're in pain, and when they've simply had enough.
Every groom is a conversation. Our hands, our eyes, and our observations tell us so much about a dog's physical and emotional wellbeing. The more we understand canine communication, behaviour, health, and welfare, the safer, kinder, and more compassionate we become as professionals.
I'll never stop learning because every seminar, every mentor, and every new piece of knowledge makes me a better groomer and a better advocate for the dogs in my care. I can't wait to watch this amazing expert in action and continue expanding my skills. Learning never stops. ❤️

The recent reports of incidents involving dogs in grooming salons and doggy daycares have been heartbreaking. My thoughts are with every family who has lost or had a dog injured.
As these conversations unfold, many people call for more regulation. Personally, I'm not convinced that's the answer. Rules on paper don't automatically make dogs safer. Education does.
One of the biggest challenges for owners is knowing how to choose a groomer. People are told to read reviews, ask about qualifications, or get recommendations. But reviews can be misleading, recommendations only tell part of the story, and most people don't know what different qualifications or certifications actually mean.
Professional grooming is so much more than giving a dog a haircut. It includes understanding skin and coat health, canine first aid, hygiene, safe handling, stress recognition, canine communication, body language, and knowing when a dog has reached its limit. Those skills help keep dogs safe.
The same applies to owners. Canine body language is more complex than many people realise. A shaking dog isn't always terrified, and a quiet dog isn't always relaxed. The more we all understand dogs, the better decisions we make for their welfare.
I believe the future of our industry isn't more bureaucracy. It's better education for professionals and better education for the public. An educated groomer makes better decisions. An educated owner asks better questions.
I'd love to hear your thoughts. How do we make our industry safer while continuing to support the many dedicated professionals who care deeply about the dogs in their hands?
