Thornbury Primary School NZ

Thornbury Primary School NZ We are a small rural school tucked in the heart of the Western Southland in New Zealand. We welcome you to the Thornbury School family.

Our school has a roll that supports three classrooms and the Board of Trustees has a strong commitment to keep this status. The school lies in beautiful grounds surrounded by trees and a large playing field. At the back is an area planted out in native trees where our hens reside and many native birds come to feed on the school bird feeder. The classroom vegetable gardens are set up in a sheltered spot behind the main building and close by are the two worm farms. We have a strong commitment to teaching our children about caring for our environment and the value of learning the skills of sustainability. The netball/tennis courts lie out the front of the school and to the east of this is an area, dominated by a wise, old oak tree, that has recently been developed into a senior fitness training complex. Our outdoor swimming pool is used on hot, summer lunchtimes for a chance to cool off by the children but for swimming instruction we go through to Riverton. The community are able to get keys for the pool for recreational use out of school hours. The Board of Trustees, the Staff, the parent community and the children all work very hard together to ensure the school vision statement of: ‘Giving all children equal opportunity to reach their fullest potential’ is adhered to. They take pride in the fact that, the school is a family orientated school where children have a chance to grow in all aspects of their development in a safe, stimulating and supportive atmosphere.

Thanks John and Ronnie for pruning and sorting out apple trees this week. Room 1 and Room 3 were on the job getting rid of all the cuttings from under the trees.

Potato Day was a hit. From the potatoes we had grown and harvested we made potato bake, pancakes, waffles, soup, loaded fries and many more delicious dishes. Thanks to Laura from the Home and School cooking up sausages to go with them and to our Mums and Grandmums that came and helped.

Today the Thornbury Year 5 and 6 netball team were at the Netty Fest in Winton. They had a great day out and managed to win all their games. A big thank you to Maleia, our superstar umpire and to Sharon and Laura for helping out with the coaching. Netball, new experiences and teamwork were the winners on the day.

We had hoped to set up the Thornbury Hall meeting room for today's Speech Assembly, but we've decided the space will be too tight.

As a result, today's Speech Assembly will now be held in Room 3 at the same time of 1:30 pm.

Thank you.
