Pukekohe Central Kindergarten was established and opened in 1954. The kindergarten has a long history of involvement within the Franklin Community. This has resulted in a strong connection with generations of families.Pukekohe is a rapidly growing diverse urban community. ional place where children can meet and make friends while they explore and experience new and exciting challenges. A place in which parents/ whanau are welcome to spend time with their children. An environment where children have the opportunity to make their own choice and are affirmed as capable and independent leaners. Through Professional Development we provide the ongoing quality of Early Childhood Education. Our tamariki at Pukekohe Central Kindergarten have been busy getting our garden ready for spring! 🌱🌼

Last week, they prepared our garden beds with fresh compost and, once it had settled, they were ready to take the lead. 👩‍🌾👨‍🌾

This week, the tamariki took control and planted out a beautiful herb garden, an edible garden, and some fabulous strawberry plants! 🍓 With some thoughtful companion planting, they are also learning how we can naturally help protect our plants from insects and encourage a healthy, thriving garden. 🌿🥕🍅🌻

It has been wonderful watching the tamariki get hands-on, make decisions, work together and learn about caring for our environment. We can't wait to watch our gardens grow and, of course, enjoy the harvest along the way! 💚🍓

The crisp mornings and beautiful days this week have been lovely and there has been lots of learning, exploring, and fun at Pukekohe Central Kindergarten. ☀️❄️ Making the most of the winter sunshine! ❄️☀️

There's something special about a sunny winter's day, especially when it's spent outdoors with friends!

Our tamariki have been busy co-creating, imagining and problem-solving together using a wonderful variety of open-ended resources. From building blocks, outdoor pipework, water play, to recycled boxes and loose parts, every creation has been unique, with children sharing ideas, negotiating roles and learning from one another along the way.

Whether experimenting with the flow of water, constructing imaginative creations, or working together to solve challenges, these rich play experiences encourage creativity, teamwork and resilience, showing that some of the best learning happens when children are given the freedom to explore, create and collaborate together.

We love seeing our tamariki making the most of our outdoor environment, soaking up the winter sunshine, enjoying water play, and building friendships—one creation at a time. 💛

🐣💛 What a magical two weeks it's been at Pukekohe Central Kindergarten! 💛🐣
Our tamariki have loved every moment of the Living Eggs programme. From watching the very first cracks appear in the eggs to seeing our precious baby heihei hatch, every day brought excitement, wonder and lots of smiles.
Along the way, the children learnt about the life cycle of a chicken and what it means to care for living things. They showed incredible kindness as they learnt to use gentle hands, quiet voices and respect that our baby chicks needed plenty of rest to grow strong and healthy.
There were so many special moments as our tamariki cuddled, observed and cared for the chicks, building empathy and a deeper understanding of kaitiakitanga—caring for all living things.
As our programme came to an end, five of our beautiful baby heihei went home with one of our kaiako, where they will continue to be loved and cared for. We can't wait to share updates as they grow!
What a special experience for our tamariki, creating memories that will last a lifetime. 💛🐥

Colour Mixing and Experimentation!

What an exciting opportunity to explore the magic of colour! Through mixing the primary colours, children were encouraged to make predictions, test their ideas, and discover new colours through hands-on experimentation.

As they explored, children demonstrated curiosity, creativity, and confidence as they investigated how colours changed when combined. They developed working theories by hypothesising about what might happen, then refining their thinking through observation and exploration.

Experiences like these support children's learning dispositions by encouraging persistence, problem-solving, and a willingness to take risks in their learning. Through open-ended exploration, children built their understanding of cause and effect while expressing their ideas and delight in their discoveries.

Sometimes the richest learning happens when we slow down, get back to the basics, and allow children the time and freedom to explore, experiment, and learn through play.

🐣 Living Eggs Update – Day 3 🐣

What an exciting day we had at kindergarten today!

When we arrived this morning, everyone quickly noticed that one of the eggs had begun the hatching process and had started to pip (make its first little crack in the shell). The children's faces lit up with excitement as all eyes turned to the incubator, eagerly watching and waiting to see what would happen next.

As the morning went on, our little chick began making some real progress. First, it chipped away a small piece of the shell before gradually making the opening bigger. Before long, we caught our first glimpse of a tiny beak peeking out! After around half an hour of determined effort, the chick finally pushed its way free from the shell.

The children spent the rest of the day carefully observing the newly hatched chick as it rested in the incubator, growing stronger and drying off after its big arrival. They also kept a close eye on the remaining eggs, eagerly checking to see if any others had started to hatch.

By the end of the day, we had welcomed one beautiful chick into the world! We can't wait to see how many more chicks decide to hatch overnight or tomorrow.

The excitement is certainly building, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you over the coming days! 🐥💛

What a special and exciting day we had today! Our Living Eggs experience arrived, giving the children a wonderful opportunity to observe the incredible journey from egg to chick. Over the next two weeks, the children will watch the eggs hatch and the chicks grow, providing a hands-on learning experience that sparks curiosity, wonder, and excitement.

This experience encourages children to develop important learning dispositions as they observe changes over time, ask questions, make predictions, and share their ideas with others. Through caring for the chicks and engaging in meaningful discussions, the children will strengthen their confidence as learners, practise patience and responsibility, and build empathy and respect for living things. We look forward to seeing their curiosity flourish as they explore, discover, and make connections through this memorable experience.

We're looking for a loving new home for our much-loved Danemann piano. ❤️🎹

This beautiful piano has been part of Pukekohe Central Kindergarten for many years, filling our spaces with music, songs, and special memories. While we're very sad to see it go, it's time for it to begin a new chapter with someone who will enjoy it for years to come.

Please note:
• It hasn't been tuned for many years and will likely need some TLC.
• It will need to be picked up from the kindergarten.

Ngā mihi to our wonderful kindergarten community for embracing and participating in our Matariki Wearable Arts Celebration. It was such a joy to see the creativity, effort, and enthusiasm shown by our tamariki and whānau.

There were so many incredible costumes inspired by the ngā whetū o Matariki, and each one helped make our celebration meaningful, memorable, and filled with pride.

We are so grateful for the support of our tamariki, whānau, and kaiako in bringing this special event to life. We hope everyone also enjoyed sharing in the hāngī as part of our celebration together.
