He mihi nui ki a koe Jacqueline!

Acknowledging our researcher, Jacqueline Paul, whose mahi and expertise in Māori housing continues to contribute to important conversations around housing affordability, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, human rights and the rights of Māori whānau.

Jacqueline was recently featured by Te Ao Māori News and RNZ’s Morning Report following the recent release of the New Zealand Human Rights Foundation review on the right to a decent home in Aotearoa.

The review highlights the lack of progress in realising the right to housing since 2023, including concerns around affordability, security of tenure, accessibility and cultural adequacy.

A spectacular Day 2 of our wānanga, led by Tūhourangi Kāinga-based researcher Hana Tapiata and Te Maiora Rurehe, exploring the breathtaking Waimangu Volcanic Valley. An unforgettable experience of one of the world’s remarkable geothermal wonders, trekking through native bush to Lake Rotomahana.

Big mihi to freshwater fisheries biologist Dr Ian Kusabs for showing us the freshwater kōura and Nico Donovan-Pereira for sharing his freshwater management case study on the Tarawera Lakes system.

He mihi maioha ki a koutou Hana, Te Maiora, me te iwi o Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao mō ō koutou manaakitanga me te aroha nui ki a mātou. Such a privilege to be guided by John Turi and experience Whakarewarewa and the beauty of the geothermal pools. Learning the kōrero tuku iho and whakapapa to the whenua through pūrākau and waiata, ‘infiltration through normalisation’.

Earlier this month, Pūrangakura welcomed researchers, rangatahi, whānau, and community leaders to the Generation Kāinga Research Symposium at Te Pou Theatre.

Over two days, researchers shared research findings, lived experiences, and creative expression, reflecting on what it means to Whakarauoratia te ūkaipō and support rangatahi and whānau to exercise mana motuhake as a pathway to kāinga.
