2027 ENROLMENTS

The Waikawa Bay School Board invites applications from parents who wish to enrol their child(ren) at Waikawa Bay School next year. Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available on our website at https://www.waikawabay.school.nz/enrolment . Applications need to be made using the schools pre-enrolment form which is also available on the website, or from the School Office: [email protected]

The board has estimated that there will be 1 New Entrant place available for out of zone students in 2027.
The deadline for receipt of applications for out of zone places is 3pm, Friday 11th September 2026.

If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot and families notified before 3pm, Friday 18th September 2026.

In order to avoid overcrowding, or the likelihood of overcrowding, the Board of Waikawa Bay School has adopted an enrolment scheme which has been approved by the Ministry of Education. Under this scheme, students will be enrolled if they live within the home zone described below.

A group of our senior students rolled up their sleeves today and took part in a tree planting session alongside volunteers from Picton Dawn Chorus and the Ngahere group.
It was a fantastic opportunity to give back to our local environment and to learn more about the importance of native planting and conservation. A big thank you to the volunteers who shared their time and knowledge — our students came away inspired and proud to be making a difference.

Today we celebrated another busy and awesome fortnight of living and learning the Waikawa Way at our school assembly!

Our tamariki have been busy learning and growing in so many different ways — from discovering how to grow kūmara, developing their tennis skills, taking part in Kapa Haka at the marae, to showing their support for Daffodil Day by dressing in yellow. 💛

It is fantastic to see our tamariki embracing new experiences, sharing their learning and getting involved in our school and wider community.

A huge well done to all of this week's award winners! You should all be very proud of yourselves. A special congratulations to Scott and Elsie, who were the recipients of this week's trophies. Kia Whamīharo tamariki ma!

Today our tamariki took on another Maths-a-thon House Challenge — and this one was all about space, strategy and teamwork!

The challenge was simple… how many tamariki could each house fit inside a square?!

There was plenty of squeezing, measuring, problem-solving and, of course, lots of cheering as each house tried to fit as many people as possible into their square!

Congratulations to Whatamango, who took out this week’s challenge!

Today we showed our support for Daffodil Day by dressing in yellow, and our tamariki certainly brought the sunshine. They looked absolutely fantastic!

Our wonderful Student Leaders also got into the spirit of the day, selling Daffodil Day-inspired ice creams, with all proceeds going to the Cancer Society.

A big congratulations to Peighton and Tuva, who were our Best Dressed winners and scored themselves some awesome vouchers!

Yesterday, four of our senior tamariki, along with Erin, headed along to the Marlborough Research Centre for a special afternoon exploring the story of kūmara.

The tamariki learnt about traditional kūmara growing methods, including how to make a kūmara tāpapa and the knowledge and skills needed to grow kūmara successfully.

While they were there, they also had the opportunity to learn Pipi-kaheru (tīkapekape), a traditional Māori game associated with the kūmara harvest. The game involves using a kaheru (digging tool) and kī, developing hand-eye coordination, agility and teamwork while connecting play with the traditions and stories of the kūmara harvest. What a fun way to learn!

The tamariki also brought some kūmara back to school, which will be carefully looked after in our greenhouse while we wait for them to sprout their slips (tīpu). In around 12 weeks, these will hopefully be ready to plant in our very own school māra kai!

Our new kūmara experts then headed down to Waitohi Kindergarten this morning to share their new knowledge with the younger tamariki. 🥰

We love seeing our senior students taking on leadership roles, sharing their learning and passing knowledge on to the next generation. This is tuakana-teina in action — learning, sharing and growing together.

A huge thank you to the Marlborough Research Centre and Reuben Molnar from Te Whatu Ora for providing this wonderful learning opportunity for our tamariki!

We have been incorporating maths with house challenges and today we did the great dinosaur race!

Each house raced to get their dinosaur to the other end of the table by rolling toilet paper. It was so much fun, and a great way to get the kids problem solving, working together and making estimations!
