This is what it looks like to train to be a Secondary School teacher with The Teachers’ Institute.

This week, trainees are in for a block course at our campus in Parnell, building their academic knowledge with our dedicated team of Teaching Fellows and experienced Subject Leads.

Throughout the year, block courses and workshops held at The Teachers’ Institute campus are interspersed with school-based training, in the classroom.

It’s a model that allows our trainees to test and apply the theory as they learn it, and to refine their practice in the classroom as their academic knowledge grows.

As our trainee Siobhan put it:

"I really enjoy coming to the workshops and meeting with other like-minded trainees, learning from them and sharing stories, and then going back to school and implementing straight away what we’ve learnt. I don't think I would have done it any other way."

"Something was missing."

Siobhan had a Masters degree in industrial and organisational psychology and a great role in the public sector, but she couldn't see herself doing it for another five years.

“I really wanted a job that was based in the community where I’d be working with people. I wanted something that was in person, every day. I also wanted something that would give me more variety – not just showing up to do the same thing each day."

Teaching ticked all the boxes.

Meet Bas.

Bas is currently training to be a secondary school Digital Technology teacher.

He had a previous successful career as an Animation Director, and he loved it. But at 53, and coming out of a big project, he realised he wanted to do something different.

He'd watched a few friends make the switch to teaching later in life.

He wanted something where he could keep learning.

And teaching had been in the back of his mind for a while.

“Training to teach was everything I was looking for,” he explains. "It's never too late to make a change, if you find the right fit.”

Last week, we held our largest Information Session to date.

It was incredibly heartening to see so many people gathered together with a shared interest in becoming a teacher.

A common theme amongst them - the desire for more meaning and purpose, and a career in which they can see and feel the impact they're having every single day.

It was our new CEO Heather McRae's first time hosting an Information Session.

In her words:

"Many people with a raft of adventures and experiences join teaching because of the intrinsic value it adds to their lives and the students they teach.

It is an enriching and fulfilling experience to share knowledge with our young people - but there is an even deeper purpose to teaching.

We prepare our young people for life ahead - imparting a sense of belonging, engaging with their cultures, and deepening their resilience to change.

At TTI we are privileged to have the opportunity to invest in our future generations through creating world class teachers."
