Horse vision is very different to humans. As a prey animal they can detect motion that our brain is too slow to pick up. A hand or hoof stand suddenly 'appearing' out of a blind spot can be very dangerous. Having the handler turn the head and neck to a position where the horse can see the trimmer helps the horse stay calm.

The hardest part for most people learning to trim is rasping the heel buttress area. This part of the hoof is always growing forward under the horse but for good hoof function it needs to be right at the back of the foot as it works with a healthy frog to take the initial ground contact in a heel first landing.
