Horse vision is very different to humans. As a prey animal they can detect motion that our brain is too slow to pick up. A hand or hoof stand suddenly 'appearing' out of a blind spot can be very dangerous. Having the handler turn the head and neck to a position where the horse can see the trimmer helps the horse stay calm.

The hardest part for most people learning to trim is rasping the heel buttress area. This part of the hoof is always growing forward under the horse but for good hoof function it needs to be right at the back of the foot as it works with a healthy frog to take the initial ground contact in a heel first landing.

The seat of corn/bar triangle is the very back part of the sole - blue area - this is an important landmark that helps determine how low the wall can be rasped.

The next 5 trimming videos are a guide for my clients trimming their own horses while I'm out of action with a fractured wrist.
Anyone who has been to one of my trimming clinics may also find them helpful.
This is a basic maintenance trim that gets people started on their hoof care journey.
If your horse has soundness issues please contact a professional trimmer
