“You don't feel distance. You feel like you're part Māori when you come here to learn Te Ataarangi.”
For Folole Vailima (Aleipata, Samoa), learning te reo Māori wasn’t just about picking up a language. It was about finding a sense of belonging. As she says, in these spaces, the distance disappears. There are no barriers; there is simply us, learning together, connected by the reo.
"I wholeheartedly encourage teachers to give Te Ataarangi a go. It provides a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment where everyone learns at their own pace. Every new kupu, phrase, and karakia builds your confidence and positively impacts your teaching."
— Folole Vailima
Folole started to learn the reo while teaching at Deanwell Primary in Hamilton. Her kōrero is a beautiful reminder that our kaiako are a key part of reo revitalisation. When teachers confidently use te reo Māori, they normalise the language for the next generation, making it part of everyday life.
Folole also gave a mihi to her kaiako, Erana Brewerton, who is also a much-loved pou of Te Ataarangi.
"Our tutor, our kaiako pono is amazing. You feel included."
Tō waimaria hoki, Folole! We mihi to Whaea Erana too for her ngākau mahaki, her manaaki i te kaupapa o Te Ataarangi, and for championing the innovation behind Ataarangi ONLINE. Because of this, the reo Māori immersion methodology - and our Ataarangi kaiako - can reach people who want to learn, no matter where in the world they are. 🌿

Days 2 & 3 | He Reo Ahikā | Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri
Nui te mahi, nui te wānanga, nui te katakata ❤️
Our Horopaki Ōpaki (in person reo wānanga) took us out into the taiao to build connection to whenua, whakapapa and kōrero about mahinga kai and raranga. Ngahau ana!
Kui Edith spoke of where she grew up. Ātaahua e Kui ❤️
Kui Rānui our expert weaver took whānau out to harvest before we came inside to learn the reo of that mahi through the rākau. 🥰
Then we caught weka, a unique kai on Wharekauri, prepared them and kept the beautiful huruhuru for Kui Rānui and whānau to make kākahu ❤️
All of this beautiful kōrero, activity and places is being captured for future reo, mihimihi and tikanga lessons as part of He Reo Ahikā.
🌱 He Reo Ahikā is a Reo Kōrero initiative led by Matua Ruakere to tautoko hapū and iwi to nurture their mita, reo and tikanga through in-person wānanga and Ataarangi ONLINE. Learning the reo online makes it accessible to uri from anywhere in the world. 🥰
Uri of Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri are supported financially by the Trust to enrol and learn the reo through Te Huanui (Ataarangi ONLINE) 👏. Remember enrolments close 6 July, classes start the week of 27 July. Kia tere and let kaimahi of the Trust know! More info about Te Huanui here 👉🏾 Www.reokorero.com/te-huanui

🤔 What happens when a Principal and her Deputy swap places and become the students? They learn much more than te reo Māori.
A heartfelt mihi to Louisa Barham (Ngāpuhi) and Haylee Webber (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāti Raukawa), Principal and Deputy Principal at Te Kura a Rohe o Whaingaroa (Raglan Area School), who had a kōrero with us about their experience so far learning to kōrero Māori with Te Kura Raunui (Ataarangi ONLINE).
The verdict? Haylee loved it so much she applied for Rau 2 (Level 2) three times just to make sure she didn't miss out! Ktktktktkt 😂
But for these two school leaders, it hasn’t just been about building their confidence to kōrero in a safe space. It has also been a masterclass in great teaching.
“While I’m a learner, I’m actually watching the really good teaching strategies throughout these two hours," Louisa explains. "Role modelling, practice, reinforcement, reviewing, positivity. These are all good strategies for teaching, so while you’re going in there for yourself and you’re learning, it’s reinforcing good teaching strategies."
Te ātaahua hoki o ēnā whakaaro e hoa.

"What if I make a mistake?"
*Spoiler alert! It's totally normal, and the science shows that the more we embrace and learn from our mistakes, the faster our fluency in te reo Māori will develop.

Meet your Kaiako ❤️ Anei a Rana Tamaka (Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāruahine).
💬 “I don't know how I could grasp my beautiful taonga te reo Māori with a pen and a paper. I sort of had to attune my ears to the wairua of Te Ataarangi.”
Like many parents, Rana’s reo journey began when her tamariki started at kura. She wanted them to grow up strong in their identity. She soon found herself on a journey of her own. Miharo ana 🤎
For Rana, learning with Te Ataarangi has felt right. Even though it was a bit nerve-wracking to put down the pene me te pepa she embraced rumaki (immersion) and says she loves how she it supported her to kōrero.
She hasn’t left since!
Today, Whaea Rana is affectionately known as "Aunty Zoom” within our Te Huanui (Ataarangi ONLINE) whānau. As a Taihuirangi leader, she ensures everything runs smoothly for our ākonga and Taiwhirinaki (teachers) as they settle into their kopa-iti (breakout rooms).
Tēnā koe, Rana i ō mahi katoa mō te whānau o Te Huanui. Kātahi te wahine aroha, whakakatakata hoki!

Meet your Kaiako ❤️
Anei a Kelly Potatau (Rākaipaaka, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Raukawa)
“I can tell you it’s beautiful to learn te reo Māori, and it is for everyone. He rongoā tō te reo Māori.”
Kelly is the driving force behind the scenes, making sure the journey with Te Huanui is seamless and supported.
She has been our Pou Huanui (Te Huanui Manager) since we ran the very first Te Huanui pilot for Ataarangi ONLINE in late 2024. Our Reo Kōrero movement would not have blossomed the way it has without her incredible mahi.
When you join Te Huanui, Kelly is one of the key people walking alongside you. Whether she’s helping you settle into class, answering pātai, or supporting our Taituarā (lead kaiako) and Taiwhirinaki (support kaiako), Kelly is looking out for our Te Huanui whānau. She says her number one priority is ensuring our ākonga have the very best experience within our Te Huanui kaupapa.
That includes creating a wāhi haumaru - a safe and supportive learning environment where both ākonga and kaimahi can learn, grow, and flourish together.
“Ahakoa ko wai koe, ahakoa nō hea koe, nau mai ki te ako i tō tātou reo rangatira.”
If you’re ready to step into your own reo journey, Kelly and the Ataarangi whānau will be ready to welcome you. Nau mai, haere mai, e rarau mai.
