* Ideas for Running a Fabulous Chapter Chat Programme *

With Chapter Chat 66 just around the corner I thought that I’d put together some implementation ideas on how to successfully integrate Chapter Chat into your classroom programmes.

This by no means is the definitive list, I welcome your other suggestions in the comments below.

PREPARATION

Firstly, you need to sign up for a Twitter account (Also known as X). Twitter is free and easy to use. Just go to their website and sign up. Everything is self-explanatory.

Once you have signed up to Twitter it's important to update your Twitter profile. You will need a picture, a class name, the number of the Chapter Chat you are taking part in, and the book name.
Then you will need to follow on Twitter. If you don't follow me you won't see the questions on Friday.

The people you follow are the tweets you see on your timeline. Follow all the classes that Chapter Chat are following. These are the classes taking part.

Once you've become familiar with Twitter it's now time to teach your kids how to tweet. This means teaching them all about the twitter timeline, hearts, retweets (No retweets), etc...

It's also really important to go over the 'What makes a quality tweet' guidelines. (Attached) This outlines everything the kids need to know when writing a tweet.

In my class I always get the kids to practice tweeting before the first chat so they are prepared.

Next make sure you go over the Chapter Chat digital citizenship guidelines (Attached). This outlines how to be a responsible digital citizen online and is an important part of taking part in Chapter Chat.

DURING THE WEEK

It's really important to make sure you read the required chapters to your class. It's totally up to you when you do this. I always read for 10 minutes in the morning when the kids have their brain food. Also reading straight after a break or at the end of the day works well.

If you get behind in the reading I find a good way to catch up is get the kids to draw a task from the book and then read to them. This way you can read for half an hour without interruptions.

If you have a digital copy of the book you can put it up on your big screen when you're reading or if the kids have their own copy of the book they can read along with the teacher.

I also encourage everyone to read ahead a little bit as it makes the tasks make sense for the next week. But try not to get too far ahead as then nothing makes sense.

The weekly tasks and questions are posted on the weekend on our page. Tasks are set as a guide, you do not have to complete them and you are free to make up your own.

What I do is set a few of the tasks on the kids MUST DO and CAN DO list for the week. The kids complete these when they are doing their independent reading work. Kids complete workshops with the teacher and the kids that are not with the teacher complete the tasks.

Not all kids have to complete the same tasks. Sometimes I give certain tasks to different groups, depending on their level.

I also sometimes pick the fun Chapter Chat tasks (Minecraft, art, build something) and make them for the early finishers. If you finish your literacy work then you can work on some fun Chapter Chat tasks.

Another way to complete tasks is to send some home for homework. I quite often send the Minecraft task home for homework as the kids have iPads at home and love building in their own time. Or send home some of the art/drawing tasks.

At writing time I try and incorporate some of the Chapter Chat writing tasks into our programme. I look to find a relevant learning intention that fits with the Chapter Chat writing task for the week. For example one of the Chapter Chat writing tasks might be to write a letter so I will teach them how to write letters that week, or a task might be to write a poem so we will focus on descriptive words and poem writing.

If you have completed a task and you want to share it with everyone you can at any time. Most people share their tasks on Friday during the chat but you can share them during the week too. If you share your task during the week make sure you tag in your tweet. That way I will definitely see it.

If you have limited devices in your class and you want to share a task then you can photograph kids work on one iPad or your phone and tweet them from there. I usually get the kids to do this.

Something else that has worked for me in the past is to do mini workshops around tasks, questions and the story. This allows you to go in-depth into the story with kids who need extra support. For example you might have a learning intention on asking questions and then read a part of the text with a small group and then the kids formulate questions themselves.

Before the chat it is a good idea to go over the questions with your class. Unpacking the questions beforehand will lead to better quality tweets. I usually spend half an hour, pair/sharing the questions with the kids.

Another idea is to get the kids to draft their tweets prior to the chat in their writing books or on google docs. The kids can then use these to help them when they tweet on Fridays. This works especially well with younger classes.

DURING THE CHAT

The twitter chat is on every Friday at 10-10.30am. It always pays to set up your devices prior to the chat and make sure everyone is logged on to Twitter correctly.

The first 5 minutes is dedicated to task sharing and then questions are posted every 5 minutes after that. Every Chapter Chat Question has the Question Time Poster attached to it so they are easy to see.

During the chat I get students to read out the questions to the class. Every time a Chapter Chat question comes up a child rings a bell and everyone stops and the student reads it out aloud to them.

Kids can tweet by themselves or in small groups. In my class I buddy up kids who need a little more support.

Kids can respond directly to the Chapter Chat question or just send a tweet. Both can easily be seen by everyone. Also the students do not have to respond to every question. Just tweet as much as you can.

I quite often go back over everyone's tweets after and see how many tweets everyone has sent. This way you can pick up on the kids who have done very little and provide extra assistance next time.

During the chat kids can HEART tweets that they think are great. RETWEETING tweets is not allowed as it makes it hard to know which tweets are new and it also clogs up the timeline.

AFTER THE CHAT

Firstly, I usually go back over my class tweets and highlight great tweeting! This involves reading out great tweets and highlighting what makes them great.

It's also good to check the Chapter Chat page to see which tasks have been chosen as examples of awesome work. I show these to the kids so they can see who got chosen and what quality work looks like.

I create weekly KAHOOTS Quizzes for each week. It's a good idea to play these on Friday's to see who has been listening to the story throughout the week. The KIDS LOVE THEM! They are FREE too.

Resources are only available for ONE WEEK in an effort to get you to keep up and tweet each week.

Tweeting is not compulsory, but I do recommend it as it's a great place to share and connect with other classes.

Twitter really is easy to use, and kids pick it up easily. I advise you to give it a go.

Hey everyone, I am bringing back the Chapter Chat Twitter (X) chat in Term 3.

I missed having somewhere for everyone to post cool tasks, answer questions and connect with each other.

The chat will be on Friday's from 10-10.30am and it will only feature 5 key questions, posted every 5 minutes.

I think this will make it easier for kids to keep up and answer the questions.

The first question will still be to share any tasks and activities you have done throughout the week. I will feature the best ones on the Chapter Chat page.

I have been using Twitter for over 10 years with my class and it's an easy platform to use. The kids really enjoy using it and it's a great way to teach digital citizenship too.
