Celebrant by House of Kennedy. Weddings . Events . Etiquette Hello - I am Michelle, a proud boy Mum of teens and avid inline skate hockey supporter.
I am a wedding/civil celebrant, event planner and etiquette consultant. Foster pups find a temporary home with us and I am part of the Good B*tch Baking crew - making cakes for organisations in need. It's a lovely way for me to give back to the community one muddy paw print and slice at a time.

Here's a fun game - get pegged!
Just remember to double check your spelling on all printed material.
Below it says 'chose' instead of 'choose' and 'dont' instead of 'don't'.

Can My Friend ‘Marry Us’ and the Celebrant Just Do the Legal Bit?
In the land of marriage, we celebrant's get asked this a lot! We love that your bestie is charismatic, down right funny and probably the unofficial MC of every family BBQ...
BUT - in New Zealand, the law states that the legal part of your wedding must be done by a registered celebrant - like me.
The good news though is, your friend or favourite cousin can absolutely be part of your ceremony.
They can share stories, tell the jokes, make you laugh and cry.
And, then I step in for about 30 seconds to officially marry you.
I'm happy to tag team but your bestie can not legally marry you.
Alternatively, if you've already got married in SECRET and decide weeks or years later to "tie the knot" in front of friends and family, the second ceremony must state that you are "renewing your vows" or having a commitment ceremony.
If you want to chat how we can blend the two beautifully, I love creating ceremonies that feel personal, relaxed, meaningful, and still legally sound.
💍 Your wedding. Your way.
With a little help from the rules that make it official.

✨️Wedding vows are the heart of your ceremony ✨
Your vows don’t need to be perfect poetry, they just need to be yours.
Whether a promise, a story, a laugh, or a tear — this is where you let your love speak out loud.
Keep them short and sweet or pour your heart into paragraphs, the magic lies in the honesty. Two voices, one moment, a lifetime ahead. Just keep them a similar length 💍

Did you know that a registered celebrant doesn't just officiate at weddings but can do funerals too.
This week in Nelson I'm attending a dozen workshops for Dying Matters, Going with Grace.
From Aromatheraphy, Estate Planning, Wills, Pallative Care and so very much more.
Here is a recent NZ Herald Article how the week is opening up conversations around dying.
How Dying Matters Week is helping open conversations about death and dying 'We don't want to talk about dying but it helps take away the fear.'

Did you know that the moment you say “I do” in New Zealand, your old WILL quietly says “I don’t”? (Providing you have one, that is!)
Under NZ law, marriage or civil union automatically cancels your will (unless it was written in contemplation of your marriage).
So if you wrote a will years ago, and then tied the knot, you may actually be floating around with no valid will at all. Which means the government gets to decide how things are divided. (Spoiler: it’s rarely the way you would have chosen.)
Great news, it's easy to fix!
Update your will after marriage, or
Write one beforehand that specifically says it’s made “in contemplation of marriage to [insert your beloved’s name here]”.
Think of it like updating your wardrobe after your wedding — elegant planning beats awkward surprises.
Because leaving a legacy should be done with love and intention, not left to chance. 💍📜

To Ring or Not to Ring? That is the beautiful question
Let’s talk about the iconic symbol of marriage: the wedding ring where it became common practice to wear one in the 1700's.
Here’s the thing, in Aotearoa, you don’t actually have to exchange rings at all.
That’s right. No legal requirement to slip a ring on a shaking finger while promising your I Do's.
You can mix it up by exchanging a necklace, perhaps ink yourself forever with a tattoo or simply, exchange a kiss.
Love doesn’t need to be proven by a piece of jewellery.
Whether you choose diamonds, ink, pounamu, or nothing at all—the meaning behind the moment is what matters most.
