Best of luck to all of our team who have travelled to Lower Hutt to compete in this year’s O’Shea Shield.

O’Shea Shield is an annual public speaking and drama competition requiring our students to be on their feet, thinking, talking, debating and entertaining the audience. The competition takes place annually and has been running since 1946. It sees students from the seventeen Catholic secondary schools in the Wellington Archdiocese and Palmerston North Diocese - which includes our college and Hato Pāora in Feilding - test their skills around a central topic. In 2026, it will be “Returning to the Heart”.

This is a very auspicious occasion with the 17 Catholic schools competing in Debating, Junior Prepared Speech, Oratory, and Impromptu Speech, Religious Questions, Scripture Reading in English and in Te Reo Māori, and Drama. Close to 300 secondary school students will descend on Lower Hutt from as far afield as the Hawke’s Bay and Nelson. Counting their cohorts, teachers and whanau, we are expecting close to 400 people to descend on the college for the events, and 500-600 people to attend the Drama performances at the Performing Arts Centre, Sacred Heart College.

All events will be held at Sacred Heart College in 65 Laings Road, Lower Hutt. All events are open to the public, free of charge.

Here's another one of our past pupils who was on stage this weekend. Waimihi Rota-Matchitt. Kaitātaki wahine of Tauira Mai Tawhiti. She was also first equal for Kaitātaki wahine. Waimihi attended the college 2010-2013.

We're still on the look out for pictures and vids of any past pupils whānau. If you have / find any send them through to us. It's great to be able to inspire our tauira by showing them how many wāhine who've been through the college are out there being amazing.

Another of our beautiful past pupils Eikura Albert who came through the college with her sisters during the 2010-2015 era. We've heard there were at least 25 past pupils on stage today representing their whānau hapu and iwi. We're trying to find pics / footage of as many past pupils as possible. Beautiful past pupil Ngawaiwera Campbell. She was in Christchurch singing with her band Corella yesterday and on stage today at Mataatua regionals with her roopu Tutara Kauika ki Rangataua. She's one of the many past's pupils taking to the stage in their various rohe during 2026 haka season.
Good luck ladies which ever roopu or rohe you are representing.
