Don't let those eight spindly legs fool you—this is definitely not a spider!

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? Look at the body; unlike spiders, which have two distinct segments, the harvestman has a single, fused body, & are more closely related to scorpions than spiders.

𝗧𝗼 𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿'𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗽, 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝘀—a survival trick known as autotomy—leaving the still-twitching limb behind to distract the hungry attacker while they make a quick getaway!

They're completely harmless to humans as they don't produce silk or venom, making them the gentle wanderers of the leaf litter.

NZ's longfin tuna, also known as longfin eel (𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘪) 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙪𝙥 𝙩𝙤 100!
After many decades living in NZ's freshwater, they then 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟮,𝟱𝟬𝟬𝗸𝗺 to some deep ocean trenches near Tonga and lay up to 20 million eggs and then die.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲!!!
They are a fascinating species and need better protection.
Sadly, a sharp decline in their population has occurred due to the commercial export tuna fishery.

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿! 🧐
This native flatworm, with its distinctive dark stripes, is a formidable predator that hunts other small invertebrates like the cockroach seen here.
When a flatworm catches its prey, 𝙞𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙚—𝙞𝙩 𝙜𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙘𝙞-𝙛𝙞.
By wrapping its soft, flexible body around a victim, it initiates a process called pharyngeal eversion.
Essentially, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙨 𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩, 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙩𝙪𝙗𝙚-𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙥𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙮𝙣𝙭 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙣𝙯𝙮𝙢𝙚𝙨.👀
This allows it to digest the prey from the outside in, turning its dinner into a "protein smoothie" before slurping it back up!
