Celebrating Cultural Diversity Every Day! 🌺✨

Here at Early Discoveries Waimahia, we are always looking for ways for our Tamariki to celebrate their own and other cultures.

To honor Cook Island Language Week, Davian has been busy creating his very own beautiful headband (ei katu). We love setting out the resources and letting our Tamariki freely choose their pieces, designing their headbands exactly the way they want to! 🎨🌿

It’s all part of encouraging creative self-expression and building strong cultural pride.

🎨 Who am I? | Ko wai au? 🎨

What better way to express yourself than by creating and decorating a life-sized cutout of yourself? 👤✨

Our Tamariki have been doing exactly that! Through this wonderful project, they are encouraged to share what they think makes them special, unique, and proud. These beautiful creations are a daily reminder of who they are, and we love celebrating each child's individual identity every single day within our centre. 💖🌟

🧱🔢 Building Big Brains with Duplo! 🎨🧱

Duplo is another fantastic, hands-on resource where creativity is nurtured, but it’s also the perfect tool for exploring concepts like colour and number!

Here is Jiraiya (2 years old) diving into some wonderful learning, exploring different numbers and vibrant colours alongside his Kaiako. This kind of intentional, playful interaction helps our youngest learners build a strong foundation for future maths and language skills, all while having a blast! 🌟🤝

⏳💧 More Than Just Play: The Magic of the Sandpit! ⏳💧

There is so much incredible learning that takes place right here in our sandpit!

From the obvious sensory experience of running dry sand through your fingers to discovering how its properties completely change when water is added, it’s a non-stop science and math lesson. 🧪🌊

But it’s not just about the sand—it's also a massive hub for social development. In the sandpit, our Tamariki are constantly practicing crucial life skills:

* Sharing space and limited resources 🚜

* Negotiating roles and ideas 🤝

* Collaborating and working together toward a common project (like a giant castle or a moat!) 🏰

🧩 Learning Through Puzzles… 🧩

Did you know that Tamariki need lots of hands-on experiences to strengthen the muscles in their hands before they even start writing? Holding, turning, and fitting puzzle pieces is a fantastic way to develop that crucial fine motor strength! 💪✨

Here is Davian doing some wonderful learning—carefully manoeuvring pieces to complete a beautiful Matariki puzzle. 🌟

✨ Learning and Exploring in our ‘Special Room’! ✨

Aaliyah has been busy familiarising herself with letters and exploring the moveable alphabet. Using these plastic letter cutouts, she’s been independently building three-letter words like ‘m-o-p’ and ‘d-o-g’. 🧩🔤

This hands-on approach is a wonderful, tactile way for children to practice their letter sounds and build early literacy confidence.

We invite you to come and check out our ‘Special Room’. Lovingly named by the Tamariki themselves, it’s a beautiful learning space where we always enjoy spending time. ❤️

One of our learning priorities at Early Discoveries Waimahia is keeping our children not only active but also promoting healthy eating. One way we can do this is through offering cooking experiences where children can taste a variety of fruit and vegetables. We also offer nutritious meals here at the centre.

At Early Discoveries one of our centre values is Working together/ Mahi tahi, and we encourage this throughout the teaching and learning environment. Look at this amazing collaborative art piece that our Tamariki created together with Whāea Belle in our special room.

Here at Early Discoveries Waimahia we have some extra fun ways to explore mathematics, one of these is by accessing the ‘Special room’ that is set up with Mathematical learning in mind, children are able to learn through hands on experiences with items, learning to recognize the numerals (written numbers) matching these to the quantity (Number of items) and also playing around with patterns and number games. Come and check out our special room and see all the possibilities for your Tamariki.
