Mālo aupito kihe taki Cultural Lead Seta, The Queen of Tonga Heleni, Lally, Shayne, Manjula, Mary and our student teacher Sam for a fabulous week. A great big thank you for all staff who supported these lovely ladies with activities and giving lea fk-tonga a go! How awesome was it to see the confidence of our young kaiwhare students who got up without even knowing the dance and listened to Matua Sam as their pūnake to perform two songs with actions. ***Making Harakeke Balls (Pulu)**to play hiko . *

Room 13 has been exploring traditional games played in Tonga, with a special focus on hiko, a game that involves juggling balls. To bring our learning to life, we decided to get creative and make our very own hiko balls (pulu) using harakeke.

Mālō ʻaupito, Tū Pakari for welcoming Room 13 and sharing your knowledge with us. We were privileged to learn about the traditional process of harvesting harakeke and the importance of caring for this precious resource. We learnt that the process begins with a karakia, followed by identifying the appropriate fronds to harvest and learning the correct way to cut them.

Our learning did not stop there. We also learnt about the importance of returning the leftover pieces of harakeke to Papatūānuku. This reminded us that when we take something from the land, we must also show respect by giving back and caring for our whenua.

We worked together to create our own pulu. It was wonderful to see our tamariki using their hands, developing new skills, and connecting their learning to traditional knowledge and culture.

Looking Sharp there fanau ako! Fakamālo kihe ngaahi matu'a kotoa pe 'ihe tāimi 'oku lava ai ke mou tokoni 'ofa ai kihe 'etau fanau mo enau ngaahi teunga faka'ofo'ofa.

Ngaahi lofa is a great past time for tongan students in the friendly islands. They would use coconut midribs (also used for a taufale - island broom) to make the kite and use thread and paper too. In class we added cello-tape cos its easier to hold midribs in place 😂 and we made do with shorter pieces of string! Ākonga enjoyed running all over the place to see their 'lofa' fly! We also watched video clips of different kite shapes and sizes too. We had a blast! 🇹🇴 Ākonga also wrote stories about their experiences.

The sun was shining but it was still a great time to 'kai topai' mmmm delicious! Thank you ta'ahine samoa-niue Ms Refiti for making a tongan topai 🥹🇹🇴
