A huge congratulations to our Tournament of Minds team, who have won the New Zealand National Final in the Secondary Language Literature category and earned a place at the International Final in Darwin this October.

Kira Barlow, Indie McGregor, Ryder Sax, Shia Saito-Rhodes, Elissa Cochrane, Naomi Gruener and Gracie Tonks competed in Wellington against top teams from around the country, taking on challenges that tested their creativity, problem-solving and teamwork.

The judges praised their teamwork, creativity and ability to build on each other’s ideas.

What makes this even more special is that Tournament of Minds at MHC has been completely student-led, from setting up the teams through to preparation.

We’re incredibly proud of what this group has achieved. Darwin, here we come.

We’ll share more soon about how our community can support the team on their way to the International Final.

Last month, our Year 7 and 8 students headed to Muriwai Beach for a sustainability challenge combining navigation, teamwork and environmental learning.

Students had to navigate their way to checkpoints, complete a range of challenges and demonstrate their understanding of natural cycles, all while making it back to the start and finish line in under two hours.

On average, students covered around 7 to 8 km over the course of the challenge. A great effort from everyone involved!

A favourite tradition from Mangawhai Beach School made its way to MHC recently, with our students keen to keep Book Character Day going.

Across the week, students took part in a range of book-themed activities, finishing with a storybook-inspired cake competition and a Book Character Parade.

We were blown away by the effort the students put in. The cakes were creative and impressive, the costumes were fantastic and, most importantly, the students really got involved and enjoyed the fun of the week.

It was great to see so much creativity, enthusiasm and personality on display, and to continue a tradition many of our students already knew and loved.

A great result for Indie, who spent last week in Taupō representing MHC at the North Island Secondary School Champs.

The event brings together hundreds of riders at the National Equestrian Centre, competing across a range of equestrian disciplines.

Indie and the gorgeous Weiti Vienna had a strong week, coming home with some great placings and finishing on a high by winning the showhunter class on the final day of competition.

A regional win has earned our Year 9/10 Tournament of Minds team a place at Nationals in Wellington!

After an outstanding result at last weekend’s regional competition, our senior team took out the win and will now fly to Wellington to compete in the National Tournament of Minds.

To help get them there, we’re running a raffle and would love the support of our whānau and wider community.

Tickets are $5 each and are available from the school office. Anyone is welcome to pop in and grab a ticket.

A big thank you to Dan Klink at Mangawhai Meat Shop for generously donating a meat pack, and Scott Henderson at New World Mangawhai for donating a store voucher.

We’re really proud of what this team has achieved and very grateful to the local businesses, whānau and community helping them get to Wellington. Every raffle ticket helps support their trip to Nationals.

Tsar Finn’s reign came to an abrupt end in history class recently.

Year 9 have been learning about the collapse of the Russian Empire and to help bring the history to life, they took part in their own “Candy Revolution”.

Tsar Finn began with absolute rule and an impressive stash of sweets, but a growing sense of injustice soon sparked a revolt. Lenin rallied an alliance of Bolsheviks, workers, peasants and disgruntled soldiers who stormed the palace and quickly found the Tsar was well and truly outnumbered.

There were a few twists along the way too. The nobles secretly hid their “gold”, while Lenin managed to keep a little sweet reward for himself.

A fun, hands-on way for students to explore the different groups, inequalities and tensions that helped drive the Russian Revolution.

Congratulations to Eden, who was named Junior Umpire of the Season at the Mangawhai Netball Club prizegiving.

The award recognised Eden’s dedication, commitment to fair play and the growth she has shown throughout the season, along with her positive attitude, care for players and support of younger umpires coming through.

Over the past few months, Eden has given up her Saturday mornings to umpire two to three games each week in Wellsford. She has umpired 23 junior games over the season, as well as a senior game.

Eden has also completed her Junior Umpire badge and now plans to work towards her Centre badge, opening up more opportunities for her to umpire in the future.

A fantastic achievement, Eden. We are very proud to see you contributing to the wider community in such a positive way.

It was muddy, challenging and a lot of fun. Four of our students took on The Beast last month.

Jack, Kira, Lincoln and Indie M headed along to this unique sports event run by Sport Northland, taking on a 7km off-road cross-country course over mixed terrain.

There was plenty to contend with along the way, including mud, fences and some tough sections of the course, but the group got stuck in and had an amazing day.

A great chance to challenge themselves, have some fun and enjoy something a little different outside the classroom.

A fantastic result for Mangawhai Hills College at the regional Tournament of Minds competition in Auckland on Saturday!

Two MHC teams took part after six weeks of preparation, much of it in their own time. The competition put their teamwork, problem solving and creative thinking to the test, and we are incredibly proud of the way both teams represented MHC.

Our Year 9/10 team was Elissa, Indie, Gracie, Naomi, Kira, Shia and Ryder, while our Year 7/8 team was Eve, Ava, Evie, Nixon, Hudson, Monty and Lincoln.

A special congratulations to our Year 9/10 team, who won the Language Literature category and will now head to Wellington in two weeks to compete at the national championships!

Thank you to Hope and Elissa for everything they did to support the teams in the lead-up to the competition, and to Ms Clock and the parents who helped on the day.

Well done to everyone involved, and good luck to our Year 9/10 team for Wellington!
